The world collapses for ten-year-old Mia Owen when her parents decide to move from London to South Africa. Father John wants to take over a lion breeding farm there. Mia cannot get used to the foreign country at first. Then John surprises the whole family when one day he brings home a rare white lion cub. At first Mia doesn't want to know anything about it. But she quickly takes the little lion into her heart and develops a special relationship with the growing Charlie. After all, the two are inseparable.

When Charlie is three years old, Mia discovers that her father is secretly planning to sell Charlie to a dubious trophy hunter businessman. Desperate at the thought that Charlie might be in danger, Mia decides to save her boyfriend. She embarks with him on a journey across the South African savannah to find a place of refuge where Charlie can live his life in freedom.
