action

Joseph and Maurice are the young sons of the Jewish hairdressing salon owner Roman Joffo and his wife Anna in occupied Paris in 1941. Because it is getting too dangerous for the Jewish family in Paris, they want to flee to the Italian-occupied south of France to Nice older sons Henri and Albert, parents and Joseph and Maurice are to travel for themselves. At the first transfer station, Dax , German soldiers are pulling Jews off the train at gunpoint. Joseph and Maurice find their way to safety under the care of a pastor . On foot and as a hitchhiker , they finally arrive in Nice, where they meet the rest of the family again. Joseph operates on the black market .

When the Duce is deposed in Italy, German soldiers take control in Nice and the parents Joffo put Joseph and Maurice in a reformatory. When the two of them drive back to Nice with a driver to go shopping, they are caught by German soldiers. A train with Jews goes to the concentration camps every day . Alois Brunner interrogates them personally to prove that they are Jews. Joseph and Maurice pretend they were born in Algeria but were baptized in Nice. Maurice is given two days' leave to get the baptismal certificates. A pastor campaigns for Brunner to ensure that the (forged) documents are correct and the two are released. Her father is in the back seat of the car that picks her up.

But they have to flee again - this time to a small town in the mountains. Maurice finds work in a restaurant and Joseph works as a newspaper seller at a bookseller. His daughter Françoise has taken it to Joseph. However, the bookseller is a supporter of General Pétain and his son, a collaborator in the Wehrmacht . The two brothers therefore deny their Judaism.

During a walk, Françoise and Joseph witness how collaborators, including Françoise's brother, execute Resistance fighters. Françoise then lies crying in Joseph's arms.

One day the newspaper reports the liberation of Paris . Now the collaborators are upset. Joseph saves the lives of the bookseller and his wife by stating that the latter hid Jews - namely him - in his house. Françoise leaves the town without saying goodbye to Joseph.

Back in Paris, the sons and Anna Joffo - in black - meet again. The father Roman Joffo was abducted and died in a concentration camp .

criticism

“Film adaptation of the autobiographical debut novel by Joseph Joffo, which somewhat softens the bitterness of the subject with its delight in beautiful landscapes and contemporary colors; nevertheless, the play of the child actors in particular allows the young protagonists to participate intensively.
