action

France, 1993. Colonel a. D. Raoul Duplan is found shot dead in his home. The police are at a loss, whereupon the army assigns the young officer Galois to investigate. Shortly afterwards, she received a letter containing a few pages in the diary of a lieutenant who had served under Duplans' command in the Algerian war since 1955 and who had disappeared under mysterious circumstances in 1957. The law student had volunteered out of heartache.

Every day Galois receives a continuation of the diary in which Rossi describes in detail his ambivalent relationship with Duplan and his dirty methods. Rossi also had to be present at torture and public shootings. In the end, Galois realizes who it was who shot Duplan.

criticism

“The film adaptation of the novel combines a contemporary crime story with the largely suppressed topic of the Algerian war. The remarkable, well-acted film debut succeeds in confidently interlacing the time levels. "

"Director Laurent Herbiet turned this gripping work around a dark chapter of French colonial history [...] Herbiet [...] skilfully and mercilessly combines a modern murder story with the historical events in black and white in the former French department, in which the ' Pieds-noirs' described French Algerians as a colorful community until independence in 1963.
