The Women’s Source is a 2011 Franco-Belgian-Italian-Moroccan feature film directed by Radu Mihăileanu .

action

In a small mountain village in North Africa, it has always been a tradition that women bring water into the village from a remote spring. There have always been falls and accidents and almost every woman in the village has lost several unborn children in this way.

One day the young Karima falls on the mountain and loses her child. Leila, who also lost an unborn child in this way, comes up with a plan: She wants to get the men to fetch the water from the spring instead of the women or to build a well in the village. The tradition is based on structures from a time when men went to war for women. However, there is no more war, the men sit together over tea all day and let the women work. Leila proposes a love strike to change the mind of the men - without water, no sex.

Few women initially join Leila's plan. The biggest opponent is Leila's mother-in-law Fatima, who had always advised her son Sami not to marry Leila. She had planned another woman for him. Teacher Sami, however, married Leila out of love and taught her to read and write as the first woman in the village. He also supports Leila on her love strike. Other women cannot stand up to their husbands and are raped by their husbands every night. It is the village elder, known as the “old gun”, who gives the women advice on how to avoid their husbands at night. Soon those rejected in this way gather in the village in the dark to discuss the current situation. A village meeting of men reveals that the younger ones tend to be on the side of women. Sami begins studying the Koran with Leila, knowing that she will soon be called to the Imam to stand up for her actions.

The women's love strike becomes known over time, the men are mocked as weak in the neighboring village and Leila's sister-in-law Aicha is disobedient by her boyfriend. Sami's parents advise him to take a second wife who wants to have children. Sami refuses, but in the end even loses his job as a teacher because, as a yielding man, he cannot be a good role model for the children.

One day an entomologist appears in the village and moves in with Sami's brother. He is a journalist and wants to write a report on insects. Leila recognizes her former great love in him and confesses to Sami that she had a relationship with the man before the marriage. Sami is horrified at first. He threatens his rival and wants to kill him, but he makes it clear to him that although he has come to the village to bring Leila back, he has learned here that they are a deeply loving couple. Now he no longer knows what he actually wants in the village. Leila, in turn, manages to convince the imam of the women's point of view.

Sami gets the journalist to deal with the situation in the village. He is now experiencing the women's love strike, sees their public protest at the harvest festival in the largest village in the area, and learns that the village administration had already applied two years ago to have a water pipe laid in the village. He is writing an article about the situation. In fact, those responsible react quickly: Within a very short time, a water pipe is being laid in the village, as the government fears that the love strike could spread to other villages and that the women could end up demanding more than water in the village. The women have asserted themselves and gained more self-confidence. Yet one of them realizes that the source of women is ultimately the man - and is cheered by the other women for their words.
