In addition to his theater career in Casablanca, Majd became one of the pioneers of Moroccan television and Moroccan film history. After several supporting roles in international productions, he was able to rise to one of the most sought-after and successful film actors in the country around the turn of the millennium. He has received awards for his performances at several film festivals in Germany and abroad, including the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres .

biography

Mohamed Majd was born in Casablanca in 1940 in the Derb Sultan . After the early death of his mother, he grew up with his grandmother in Derb Martini and had to contribute to the family income through work early in his childhood. Through a magazine he found out about the possibility of distance learning with a film institute in France. He then completed courses in Marrakech and a conservatory in France, among others . Due to family problems, Majd returned to Morocco without having completed his training. He achieved his goal of becoming an actor against his father's will.

Majd came to the theater through the playwrights Abdelkader El Badaoui and Mohamed Elkhalfi . After he was active at the Theater at-Tabaqa al-ʿāmila ('working class') and later in the theater group of El Badaoui, he devoted himself entirely to the art of acting and, at the age of nineteen, he joined the ensemble of the Théâtre municipal of Casablanca under director Tayeb Saddiki where he remained active until 1970.

Majd's first engagement in a television production dates back to 1965 when he appeared in the 16-part television series at-Tadhiya  /التضحيةappeared, the first television series to be shown on Moroccan television. In 1970 he starred in the film Forêt des Abdelmajid R'chich , one of the first films by a Moroccan director. After a crisis at the theater, he accompanied the music group Jil Jilala from 1972 to the end of the 1970s as part of their management. In 1973 he took on another role in a R'chich film ( Al Borak ). Majd came into contact with the international film business in 1976 when he starred in Moustapha Akkad's Mohammed - The Messenger of God . After leaving Jil Jilala, Majd integrated himself into Troupe Théâtre 80 at the instigation of Aziz Saadallah and Khadija Assad , with whom he toured at home and abroad. In 1980 he wrote with Shadd al-Mantīh  /شد المنطيحeven a play. He remained connected to the theater not only as an actor, but also in lighting technology and assistant director.

Around 1990 there were further engagements of Majd in supporting roles in international productions such as Philippe de Brocas Sheherazade - With 1001 HP into adventure (1990). In Moroccan productions he limited himself to roles in television films and series; It was not until the late 1990s that Majd appeared again in Moroccan cinema productions, with Nabil Ayouch's film drama Ali Zaoua, Prince of the Road (2000) as a turning point . Majd subsequently played in Daoud Aoulad-Syads Aoud rih (2002), Tarfaya (2004) and Fi intidar Pasolini (2007), among others . In this late phase of his career there were also award-winning films that achieved international fame. Examples include Faouzi Bensaïdis one thousand months (2003), The Great Journey of Ismaël Ferroukhi (2004), Rachid Bouchareb's Days of Glory (2006) and source of women by Radu Mihăileanu (2011).

In late 2012, Majd took part in the Dubai International Film Festival to promote the film Zero ( Nour-Eddine Lakhmari ). Shortly afterwards he was admitted to the Moulay Yusuf Clinic in Casablanca with breathing problems, where he died on January 24, 2013. His grave is in the Ach-Chouhada cemetery in Casablanca.

Mohamed Majd was married to the actress Fatiha Ouatili , who is also the mother of his children. This marriage ended in divorce.

Meaning and recognition

Mohamed Majd has received several awards as “best actor”: 2001 at the Festival of the Three Continents in Nantes for his performance in Aoud rih , 2003 at the Festival national du film in Oujda for a thousand months , 2005 at the Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata and on Festival national du film in Tangier for his role in the feature film The Great Journey and in 2008 at the Festival International du Film Francophone de Namur for Fi intidar Pasolini .

The International Film Festival Marrakech 2006 hosted a personal for him. In the course of the opening of this festival, Majd was also appointed Chevalier des Arts et Lettres . Before that, a tribute was dedicated to him at a festival in Martil in 2005 , and also in 2012 at the Festival International Cinéma Méditerranéen Tétouan .

Due to his career, Majd became a figurehead for the revival of Moroccan cinema at the turn of the millennium at the age of sixty. According to Jamal Bahmad in an obituary, Majd owes his international breakthrough not only to his talent, but also to the strong presence of the global film industry in Morocco such as the Atlas Corporation Studios near Ouarzazate . According to him, Majd was an example of how local actors can evolve from supporting roles in international productions to leading roles in both foreign and Moroccan films. In his obituary, Bahmad also emphasized Majd's commitment to young actors and new film producers in the Moroccan film industry.

In other obituaries, Majd was recognized as "a giant in the growing Moroccan cinema", "one of the most successful actors in the course of Moroccan cinema" and as an "ambassador of Moroccan cinema in the Arab world [and] in the international scene", the actress Naïma Bouhmala praised him as a "pioneer of Moroccan art". The Moroccan King Mohammed VI. emphasized in a letter of condolence addressed to the bereaved Majd's contribution to the broadcasting of Moroccan cinematography and awarded him posthumously the national order of merit Wissam Al Moukafaa Al Watania in the officer level.

Majd's relationship with the arts

The theater was considered to be Majd's primary passion. Majd had been drawn to the theater since childhood and starred in more than seventy different plays over the course of his life. Due to his enthusiasm for the theater, Majd was also considered a lover of music.

"I am un véritable amour pour le theater. Le théâtre c'est ma vie. »

“I have a real love for the theater. The theater is my life. "

- Mohamed Majd

The cinema, on the other hand, had approached Majd, according to a portrait on the homepage of the Tétouan Film Festival, because of the requirement, if not with intransigence. His switch from theater to cinema is due, on the one hand, to Moroccan cultural policy. Majd criticized the Moroccan subsidy policy, which he saw as responsible for the fact that society's support for the theater had decreased. Majd's theater group had difficulties promoting and organizing their performances on their tours. In addition, Majd's play Shadd al-Mantīh was not allowed to be performed.

« فالمسرح قد مات في الوقت الذي تم فيه سن سياسة الدعم »

"Fa-l-masraḥ qad māta fī l-waqt allaḏī tamma fīhi sann siyāsat ad-daʿm"

"This is how the theater died in the time when the subsidy policy was introduced."

- Mohamed Majd

Majd refused to go to Moroccan cinema for a long time, as he did not see his quality standards in it. According to Majd, it was still a baby in the 1990s. Despite numerous participations in foreign productions, Majd emphasized that he did not want to separate himself from his country and its traditions; his real pride is to have appeared in films in his home country.
