Atlas Corporation Studios
The Atlas Corporation Studios , also known as Atlas Film Studios or simply as Atlas Studios known, film studios on the northwestern outskirts of Ouarzazate , the center of the Moroccan film industry.
The studios were founded in 1983 by the Moroccan entrepreneur Mohamed Belghmi , who saw a need to establish Morocco's first permanent film studios in Ouarzazate. In order to realize this project, he bought an area of 650 hectares; He obtained the necessary financial resources as the owner of the country's first private hotel chain (Salam Hotels). In addition to various film sets, the extensive site houses modern film technology and recording studios . For this reason, Ouarzazate is also spoken of as the “Hollywood of Morocco”, which gave the city the colloquial term “Mollywood”.
The studios can be visited when a film is not being produced. Entry is MAD 80 for adults. A guided tour is included in the price (English, French and Arabic). You can also explore the area on your own. Various sets can be seen such as the Tibetan monastery from Kundun , the F-16 fighter jet from On the Hunt for the Jewel from the Nile or the Egyptian temples from the Franco-German large-scale production Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra .
About 30 kilometers from the studios is the Ksar Aït-Ben-Haddou , which served as a backdrop in various productions, for example in 1962 for Lawrence of Arabia . Films such as Star Wars (1977) were also made at Ouarzazate . The Kasbah Taourirt in Ouarzazate has also often been the backdrop, in addition to scenes from various Bible films, sections for Seven Years in Tibet and Babel (2006) were filmed here.
In the area around Ouarzazate and the Atlas Corporation Studios, the Moroccan producer Mohamed Asli ( Marrakech Express [1989]), who studied in Italy, founded a film school. With the CLA studios , the scenery for the Kingdom of Heaven is in close proximity . The CLA Studios also produce Prisoner of the Sun with.
