The gardens of Eden (original title: I giardini dell'Eden ) is an Italian film from 1998.
action
In 1947, ancient scrolls were found at the Dead Sea . The scrolls provide new insights into the early life of Jesus of Nazareth and the beginnings of Christianity . The living conditions at that time are now becoming clearer for the researchers. In flashbacks , the film then recounts the childhood and youth of Jesus.
Jesus is introduced to the Holy Scriptures by his father Joseph . However, the rules he learns are refuted by reality. When a Jewish woman is stoned to death because she has been raped by a Roman and then cast out by her husband for adultery, his doubts are nourished. The charity is more important to him than the observance of rules. After the death of his father Joseph, Jesus sets out for Jerusalem . On his journey through Israel he learns about the problems of the people who are oppressed by the Roman occupation and who live in abject poverty. He cannot discover God's message in this divided society. He meets people who are working to resist the Romans, but he does not want to join them either. Finally he follows the Essenes to the secluded monastery of Qumran . But the extremism of the Essenes also repels him. When he finally meets John the Baptist , Jesus can become aware of his true calling. After the murder of John, Jesus begins to work in public. At the Sea of Galilee he meets Simon Peter and his brother Andreas . The two fishermen join him as disciples .

Reviews
“The film does not refer to the New Testament , but shows a young person on a search for meaning who wants to fill the concepts of charity, justice and purity of heart with life. Without claiming biographical accuracy, he wants to make the human dimension of Jesus tangible and reflects the social and political circumstances of the time without deriving the causes for Jesus' work from them. "
