Alena Sjarhejewna Sannikawa ( Belarusian Алена Сяргеевна Саннікава , Russian Елена Сергеевна Санникова / Jelena Sergejewna Sannikowa * 12. June 1980 in Nawapolazk ) is a Belarussian cross-country skier .

Career

Sannikawa's first international start took place in January 1998 at the Junior World Championships in Pontresina , where she placed in a good nineteenth place over 15 kilometers. She could not repeat this result at the two following Junior World Championships, where she missed the top thirty places. After she had achieved some placements near the top twenty at FIS races, however, she was nominated for the first time for the cross-country skiing world cup on December 8, 2000 in Santa Caterina . Here and in the other races, she clearly missed the points, so that it initially remained with three World Cup appearances in the 2000/01 season. Sannikawa started at the Winter Universiade and the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2001 . While she was largely unsuccessful in the World Cup, she achieved seventh place over five kilometers at the Universiade. Two years and a few World Cup appearances later, she improved her good result at the Universiade again and came in fourth.

While Sannikawa was in the top twenty several times in a row, she still failed to make it into the points in the individual. So it was a success for her when she narrowly missed the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2005 as 33rd and 38th, with the relay she even reached tenth place. Before that, she had also performed successfully at the Universiade in 2005 and came in fourth again. In November 2005, Sannikawa finally achieved her first World Cup points in individual World Cups as the twenty-ninth and was finally nominated for the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin , where she was fifteenth with the Belarusian relay and again 29th in the 10-kilometer race followed later at the end of the year further World Cup points, at the Universiade 2007 she took part successfully as fifth, this time in the double pursuit.

At the 2007 World Cup , Sannikawa achieved her greatest success to date when she was fifteenth over 15 kilometers. In the cross-country skiing world cup 2007/08 , further points followed consistently, at the season opener 2008/09 she achieved her best result in the world cup with 19th place. The second race went even better, in which she finally finished 16th. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 she placed in the top 30 in all races. With the Belarusian relay she came in ninth.

In December 2009 Sannikawa started after a 63rd place in Davos for a few races in the Alpine Cup. In Hochfilzen she managed to win the mass start over 10 km, so that she then switched back to the A-team. At the Belarusian Championships 2010 in Ramsau am Dachstein , Sannikowa won the title over 5 km in classic style.

At the following Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver in 2010 , Sannikawa achieved a slight improvement to rank 38 after rank 43 in the individual over 10 km in the pursuit. After she came in 10th place in the relay race with her teammates, Sannikawa also finished the 30 km individual race the 38th place. In March 2010 she won the 42 km classic at Skadi Loppet .

In December she finally managed to land in the points again with 25th place in Davos. Despite this success, she switched again to the Alpine Cup and achieved another safe victory in Ortisei. In February 2011 Sannikawa succeeded in Rybinsk again the run in the points, whereupon she got a starting place at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo . After finishing 30th over 10 km, she finished 41st in the mass start individual over 30 km.

In the 2011/12 season Sannikawa launched in January 2012. However, she succeeded neither in Otepaa a good result even in Rybinsk. Therefore, it was her only two World Cup starts this season. However, Sannikawa started at the same time in FIS races and won two races in Zakopane . In March 2012, she won the Bieg Piastów over 50 km freestyle and took second place over 50 km classic. In the same month she won the 42 km classic at the Skadi Loppet . In the 2012/13 season she started weakly as 59 at the season opening in Kuusamo . A little later he finished the Tour de Ski 2012/2013 as 49th in the overall Tour standings. At the Belarusian Championships in 2013, Sannikawa won the title again in the skiathlon before winning the silver medal in the individual over 10 km.

For the 2013/14 season Sannikawa did not get a starting place in the senior national team. However, she was able to qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi through good performance in FIS races, including a victory in Tyssowez . There she finished 53rd in the skiathlon. In the two individual races over 10 km and 30 km, Sannikawa finished 43th and 42nd.
