In 1959, the idealistic, young Lieutenant Terrien replaced a company commander who was killed by self- fire in a French company in the Algerian war as a volunteer . While Terrien initially defends the ideals of humane warfare and rejects concepts of dirty war , Dougnac and the unit are already deeply entangled in the brutal partisan struggle . On Christmas Day 1961, Terrien went hunting alone, knowing that enemy troops were in the area, and was killed by a sniper.

The director Florent Emilio Siri said in an interview that he had an uncle who had served in the Algerian war, but never reported on the events of that war. Furthermore, Siri is of the opinion that almost every French family has relatives who were involved in the Algerian war, but do not talk about it.
