Martil ( Spanish: Río Martín , Central Atlas Tamazight ⵎⴰⵔⵜⵉⵍ ) is a town with around 70,000 inhabitants on the Mediterranean coast near Tétouan in the Moroccan region of Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma .

location

Martil lies - protected in the west by the Rif Mountains - directly on the Mediterranean north of the mouth of the Oued Martil at an altitude of approx. 5 to 50  m . The city of Tétouan is a good 10 km (driving distance) in a south-westerly direction; the Spanish exclave of Ceuta is just 40 km north. The climate is temperate to warm; the rain, which is abundant for Moroccan conditions (approx. 615 mm / year), falls almost exclusively in the winter months.

The rapidly growing population consists mainly of immigrant Rif- Berbers and Arabs, but the cultures have largely mixed. Moroccan Arabic and Tarifit are spoken .

History and economy

Martil was just a small fishing village for centuries. Today the main source of income for the city is the inner-Moroccan tourism. Dealers, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds have settled in the city.

Attractions

The main attractions of the city are the long sandy beach and the promenade with its cafes, restaurants, etc.
