Kento Masuda ( Japanese 増 田 顕 人 , Masuda Kento ; His Excellency Count Maestro Don Kento Masuda born June 29, 1973 in Katori , Chiba Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese composer and musician who works mainly in the USA . He is a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) and a leading international pianist from Kawai .

Life

Early years

Kento Masuda started playing keyboard instruments at the age of 5. He participated in a number of competitions for talented young musicians and always preferred to compose his own music instead of playing standard repertoires. Masuda won the first competition when he was 10 years old, and more successes soon followed. For example, he won the Junior Original Competition of Yamaha Music Foundation .

Early music career

At the age of 17, Masuda was hired by Yamaha as a musician in 1990 and made his first public appearances as a professional musician. He played classical and modern compositions at events and ceremonies and in the Yamaha premises on Fifth Avenue in New York. A year later he released his first album Wheel of Fortune . From 1993 to 1995 Kento Masuda lived in New York City and worked in the field of music production.

In the 1990s Masuda worked musically for radio broadcasts, game developers and TV / CM music performances in Tokyo . Masuda composed, wrote and arranged the music and played it on keyboard instruments. Masuda also produced his solo album entitled Myojyo (a transcription of 明星 , the Japanese word for "morning star" or Venus), which was released on June 19, 1998. On this debut album he used the stage name "Kent Masuda". In 1999 Masuda published Memories . Both albums were also released in the USA.

2000s

In 2000 Masuda founded his own music publishing company and the label "Kent on Music, Inc." ( ASCAP ) as well as the production and recording studio "Externalnet" in Tokyo. The 6th album Hands was released in 2003. For the first edition of this album Masuda used the stage name "KENT". The album was presented in France at the MIDEM music fair in Cannes and was successful on the European music market.

In 2005 Masuda signed a contract with JPMC Records, a Swiss label based in New York, and became a member of ASCAP (American collecting society for music products). Since then he has not used a stage name, but only appears under his real name Kento Masuda. His seventh album Globe sounds , mixed by the Grammy -nominated producer Charles Eller and Lane Gibson, appeared on 13 June 2006. The mastering of Globe sounds took place under the direction of Bobby Hata.

His compositions and recordings have been featured on MTV , New Musical Express and BBC Music. In 2009 Masuda created several music videos: "So We Are" , "Shine On" (documentary), "Down to Earth" for his album GlobeSounds and "Musical Notation and Concrete Poetry" (with the Portuguese poet Luís Adriano Carlos ).

2010s

Masuda's 8th album Light Speed ​​+ (2010) put the focus particularly on the composition. In 2011, Masuda Musik composed the pieces Hands and Little Tokyo Poetry for fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto for his presentations at the Femme Autumn / Winter 2011–2012 Paris Fashion Week . The two artists then worked together on the production of Masuda's short music film Godsend Rondo (directed by Tomo Oya) in Hokkaidō and this work brought numerous awards. In this film, Masuda shows herself with garments from Yamamoto's ready-to-wear collection.

In 2012 Masuda's first piano solo album and piano book All in the Silence was released . Masuda then performed live twice in the Musicasa Acoustic Concert Hall in Tokyo ( Force in the Silence and Force in the Silence 2 ). He played classic pieces and brilliant numbers from his musical career.

In 2014 Kento Masuda released his 10th album, Loved One , which was produced by award-winning producer Gary Vandy. The musicians Paul Messina (Flashpoint) and Kevin Marcus Sylvester (Black Violin) were involved in the recordings.

On November 14, 2014 Masuda gave a multicultural concert entitled 5 Elements, live at Casa Dei Diritti in Milan, Italy , together with the Japanese singer-songwriter Hiroko Tsuji, harpist Fabius Constable, soprano Donat Bortone and the Lebanese lute player Ghazi Makhoul .

On July 5th, 2017 Kento Masuda received an Artisan World Festival Peace International Initiative "Music, Performance & Humanitarian '" Award from HRH Princess Angelique Monét of the United Nations (World Peace & Tolerance Summit & Concert) Hamptons at the United Nations in New York City.

In 2018 Kento Masuda composed a classical march piece in whose honor an Imperial Highness asked him to write it. Due to the unique event, Masuda also received the title of Count from the Dynasty of the Ruric Order in 2016.

Masuda took part in the 61st Grammy Awards on February 10, 2019 with the Swedish pop star Elsa Andrén.

On May 11th, Kento Masuda performed at the Knights of St. Sylvester's Gala Concert at the St. Regis Rome Grand Hotel. Masuda also played his signature model, the KAWAI Piano CR-1M. This rare piano is limited to five pieces and is valued at 1 million euros each.

Style and Influences

In an interview, Masuda explained that he was inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach ("His music theories still have an effect today, actually on all of the music.") And Alan Menken ("The music of the Disney films enchants the audience and always promises Happy-End. ") Was influenced.
