CRAZY is a Canadian fiction film from the director Jean-Marc Vallée with Marc-André Grondin , Michel Côté from 2005 . Vallée was involved in the script and production of the film.
action
The film depicts the life of the Beaulieu family from Québec , Canada over a course of around 20 years. Zachary, born on Christmas Eve 1960, guides us through the film. Due to his date of birth and a birthmark on the back of his head, he appears to be endowed with psychic powers. His mother Laurianne is certain that it is enough just to think of someone who has been injured so that the pain or bleeding go away - and the telephone in the Beaulieu house immediately rings non-stop. Father Gervais, who also fell in love with Zachary, doesn't really care about the religious hocus-pocus and instead tries to turn his son into an athlete or musician. In addition, it is his great hobby to pick up a microphone replacement at every celebration and sing along to the same song Emmenez-moi au bout de la terre by Charles Aznavour . The family is completed by the three older brothers Raymond, who is struggling with drug problems, Christian, a bookworm who devours every book and the sports fanatic Antoine; Yvan, the youngest, was born a few years after Zachary.
As Zachary grows up, he has problems finding his way in the rigid world, which is still heavily influenced by the Catholic Church, and in addition he finds it difficult to suppress his emerging homosexuality . But he cannot open up in his family either, since his homophobic father would not tolerate this. Thus, for years Zachary vacillates between his inclinations and the desire to please his father.
At Christian's wedding there is a scandal. A guest claims to have observed how Zachary kissed another man in the car and was “so gay”. His father confronts him. Zachary, who lives in a partnership with a woman, denies that something went wrong in the car, but admits that he wanted it to. His girlfriend, who is listening to the dialogue, turns away from him in astonishment.
Zachary then goes on a search for meaning and travels to Israel - his mother had always raved about it. He comes back to Canada when his brother Raymond is in the hospital due to an overdose and dies a little later. The father slowly tries to get used to the idea that Zachary is "different" in order not to lose another son.
background
The title of the film, CRAZY , is composed of the first letters of the five sons: Christian, Raymond, Antoine, Zachary and Yvan. In addition, one of the hits of the country singer Patsy Cline , of whom father Gervais is a big fan, is also called Crazy .
Émile Vallée, who plays the 6- to 8-year-old Zachary, is the son of director Jean-Marc Vallée.
The film was Canada's official nomination for an Oscar in 2006 for Best Foreign Language Film , but was not nominated.
