action

The lecturer for philosophy Pauline and anthropologist Alex are from Paris in a small village to the south of France drawn to fulfill their dream of a house with a large garden. Alex, who is often on business trips that also take him to other continents , was initially not enthusiastic about the idea, but finally agreed to move for the sake of Pauline.

Shortly after moving in, they become friends with the couple Mathilde and Henri, who also live in a house next door. Pauline is enthusiastic about the paintings Henri, who prefers to paint his wife and muse as a nude . Mathilde and Henri are happy about the new neighbors, because another resident in the small village, Gilles Vasseur, seems very strange to them. He also lives in seclusion near Pauline and Alex - he avoids questions about himself or his environment, such as his wife's whereabouts. Nevertheless, Pauline contacts Gilles. The two discover their shared passion for botany and Gilles is very helpful towards Pauline - to the displeasure of Alex. But even Pauline fails to find out more about Gille's wife. Pauline spends more and more time with Gilles. During Alex's business trips in particular, they drive into town together, browse flea markets and get to know each other better and better.

One day Gilles gives her a rare plant that he claims he brought back from Brazil . It quickly becomes clear that the plant needs more attention than usual. Pauline calls her "Gilou" after her new acquaintance and documents her growth in a photo album. But gradually it becomes clear that Pauline's actions and thoughts are only determined by the plant. When she returns from a weekend trip with Alex one day, Gilou is in such bad shape that Pauline decides not to leave her alone from now on. There is an argument with Alex and Pauline seeks refuge with Gilles. Alex, in turn, seeks advice from Henri, who recommends that the plant go down with a pesticide . However, the plant survives this "attack" and pulls Pauline more and more under its spell. Alex has to go on a business trip again and leaves Pauline with a heavy heart. She feels more and more attracted to the plant, which, however, uses up all of its energy. Finally Pauline dies in the midst of the plant that has meanwhile taken up the entire living room. When Alex returns from the business trip, he collapses. Then, furious, he sets fire to the plant, leaves the house and puts it up for sale.

In the final shot you can see Gilles standing at his window with binoculars. He watches a happy couple who have just moved into the house. Alex watches him, who has sneaked into his house, he fires a rifle at Gilles.

criticism

"Due to numerous unexpected twists and turns, Pierre Boutron's 'Green Hell' is a masterpiece of suspense drama."

“If you want, you can enjoy the subtle mystery tension and beautiful bodies in swimwear in this stylishly photographed film. But of course you are also welcome to ask yourself what the whole thing is supposed to be. A flowery allegory of the self-destruction of the bourgeoisie? The reflection of human vanity in the essence of nature? Or just an illustration of the truism that too much love robs you of breathing? "

"This creeper doesn't want to bloom properly"
