action

Michel wants to fly to Caracas from Paris . He decides differently and leaves the airport again. He takes a taxi to the city center and, while getting out of the vehicle, collides with a woman who drops her purchases. Michel is uncomfortable about the incident, especially since he only has dollars with him and Lydia pays the taxi bill for him. Both go to a café, where Michel writes her a check. She tells him her name. Both meet the dog trainer Galba, who pretends to have met Michel once in Las Vegas . Michel has never seen Galba before but confirms his version as he realizes Galba's loneliness. Lydia, in turn, tells Michel that she lost her husband and little daughter in a car accident six months ago. Michel implies that his wife left him a long time ago.

Michel goes back to the airport, where he specifies various distant countries as the destination of his possible flight. The staff checks his data, believing that Michel is on the run. In the end, Michel booked a flight to Yaoundé , but this time again he did not board the plane. He goes to Lydia and sleeps with her. She withdraws from him when she sees her daughter's photo from the bed. She admits that she actually wants to die because she doesn't know what else to do in the world. Michel goes. He looks for Galba, who has a performance with his poodles and his monkey in a vaudeville that evening. Galba is afraid that he will die of his favorite poodle and Michel offers him to look after the poodle. During the act, which Galba considers his life's work, the monkey dances with a poodle. Michel thinks the performance is terrible. He asks Lydia to come to him. A little later he called his friend Jean-Louis and told him that his wife had separated from him that night.

Lydia appears and they both decide to view their brief relationship as an act of mutual help. Lydia takes Michel to her husband Alain's birthday party. Michel is introduced here as her boyfriend and he makes himself popular with Lydia's mother-in-law Sonia with his knowledge of Russian. Like him, other guests are also looking for the birthday child who doesn't seem to be there. A little later Lydia brings him to Alain, who is sitting in a separate room with a carer. As a result of the accident six months ago, Alain lost his ability to speak and speaks gibberish. Michel goes into it with his own gibberish, but he and Lydia soon leave the apartment. They spend the night together and want to travel together the next morning. Michel has forgotten his travel bag at Galba and calls him. He learns that Galba's favorite poodle has died and tells Galba that his wife is also dead. Lydia is confused, but offers Michel to accompany him to his apartment. In addition to the paramedic, the police are already present there. Michel's wife is actually dead - she was terminally ill and sent Michel out of the apartment to take her own life. Since then he has wandered through Paris. Although the police and especially his relatives suspect Michel of not being innocent of his wife's death, a farewell letter exonerates Michel completely.

Lydia stops in front of Galba's house and Michel fetches his bag. Galba is dead and in Michel's presence the monkey and the poodle begin their stage dance. Michel flees, but Lydia hasn't waited for him in front of the house. Michel finds only the housekeeper in her apartment. Lydia calls and tells Michel that she will go on a trip. She is already at the airport. Michel promises to wait for her.

criticism

The Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger called the love of a woman “a work about emptiness, love and death. In all cliché dialogues, Costa-Gavras shows cool solitude, an almost cruel atmosphere with excellent actors. " Cinema wrote that Costa-Gavras" [pays] for the trip to the emotional cinema with inconsistencies. But Schneider and Montand are at the height of their art. Conclusion: A storm of emotions just before the pain threshold ”.

For the film-dienst , Die Liebe einer Frau was the “story of a life crisis that is not convincing in terms of both dramaturgy and staging; However, the actors are captivating. "

Awards

A woman's love received a César in 1980 in the “Best Sound” category. The film was also nominated for a César in the categories of “ Best Film ”, “ Best Director ” and “ Best Actress ”.
