history

The name State Education Center for the Hearing Impaired was announced in 1982 in a joint circular issued by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Social Affairs and the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs involved. It refers to the educational institutions for the hearing impaired (= deaf and hard of hearing) in Braunschweig , Hildesheim , Oldenburg and Osnabrück. This makes it the binding designation of the relevant institutions in Lower Saxony. This name goes back to the former director of the Osnabrück facility, Johannes Michels . The previous expression Lower Saxony State School for the Deaf was no longer relevant from 1980, after a school for the hard of hearing had been established in Osnabrück in addition to the school for the deaf and the other schools in Braunschweig, Hildesheim and Oldenburg followed.

Previously these institutions were called institutions for the deaf and dumb . Its founders were mostly sovereigns like the blind King Georg V (Hanover) , who founded the Osnabrück Institute for the Deaf and Mute in 1857.
