Eimbcke studied theater and film studies at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México from 1992 to 1996 . He published short films during his studies and continued to do so after completing his studies. Numerous short films and music videos made him known and made his feature film debut Temporada de patos possible in 2004 . The black and white film, designed as a chamber play, is about the conversation and get-togethers of four people. Eimbcke himself said that he wanted to fathom the void cinematically and see what happens to his characters when nothing happens.

Temporada de patos was successful. At the Ariel Awards 2005 in the categories of “best film”, “best director”, “best original screenplay”, “best leading actor” and “best leading actress”, he was also able to convince the jury of several film festivals.
