Mahir Ünal (born July 1, 1966 in Elbistan ) is a Turkish politician of the Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi (AKP). He has been his party's MP for Kahramanmaraş Province since 2011 and was Minister of Culture and Tourism of his country from November 24, 2015 to May 24, 2016.

In the parliamentary elections in 2007 and in the local elections in 2004 and 2009, the sociologist was a campaign strategist for his party. He has also acted as advisor to political parties, authorities and local governments in elections in Iraq , Malaysia , Cyprus , Egypt and Lebanon .

Life

Mahir Ünal was born in Elbistan in the province of Kahramanmaraş in 1966 . After attending school in his hometown, he attended the Bahçelievler Koca Sinan Lisesi in Istanbul and graduated from college in 1984. In 1991 he successfully completed his studies in theology at Marmara Üniversitesi and in 1997 received a master’s degree in social sciences from Istanbul Üniversitesi . His specialty was social structures and social change. He then did his doctorate in sociology at the university.

In 1992 Ünal became a teacher. He later became a consultant in the field of local politics and political communication. In 2005 he became an advisor to the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce. Between 2007 and 2009 he became a member of the board of directors of İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi SK. Later he became director of the behavioral research department of a private university and taught in the field of organizational behavior .

In 2003 Ünal became a member of the AKP and taught at the party's political academy. He has been one of the AKP's campaign strategists since 2004 and organized the party's campaign in the 2004 local elections. During this time, he was an international campaign advisor for parties in Malaysia, Lebanon, Cyprus, Egypt and Iraq.

At the 3rd party congress in 2009 Ünal was elected to the central party council and vice-president of the party for research and development policy. In 2012 he was not nominated again.

In 2011, Ünal was elected his party's MP for the constituency of Kahramanmaraş in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and was re-elected in 2015.

After winning an absolute majority in the parliamentary elections in Turkey in November 2015, Ahmet Davutoğlu was appointed Prime Minister and Ünal was appointed Minister for Culture and Tourism in the Davutoğlu III cabinet on November 24, 2015 . He succeeded Yalçın Topçu , who held the post in the interim government after the June 2015 election. He was in office until May 24, 2016. His successor was Nabi Avcı .

Private life

Ünal is married and has one child.
