Aydın Güven Gürkan
Aydın Güven Gürkan (born May 10, 1941 in Perçenç , † January 22, 2006 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish political scientist and politician.
Life
Aydın Güven Gürkan was born in Perçenç (today: Akçakiraz) in 1941, a few kilometers south of the Anatolian provincial capital Elazığ . In 1963 he successfully graduated from Ankara University with a degree in political science . In 1970 he received his doctorate summa cum laude from the University of Cologne . After his return to Turkey, Gürkan taught as a professor at Gazi Üniversitesi in Ankara and was dean of the Faculty of Journalism. In 1981 he resigned due to the policy of the National University Council.
After the military coup in Turkey in 1980 , the National Security Council banned all parties in the country. It was not until 1983 that the Security Council allowed the establishment of new parties according to strict guidelines. Only three parties were allowed to vote in the first parliamentary election after the coup. Aydın Güven Gürkan became a member of the Kemalist Halkçı Parti (HP), which was in the tradition of the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP) founded by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1923 . In the parliamentary election, the HP was the second strongest party after the Anavatan Partisi (ANAP) with 30.47 percent. Aydın Güven Gürkan was elected MP of the Antalya Province to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey .
In 1984 he became general secretary of his party. On July 1, 1985 he was elected chairman of the HP, which at that time was the largest opposition party in parliament. Since the Halkçı Parti at that time was much less popular than the Democracy Sol Parti (DSP) and the Sosyal Demokrasi Partisi (SDP), two parties with a similar orientation to the HP, Gürkan decided to start talks for a union of the three parties. Although DSP chairwoman Rahşan Ecevit rejected an association, Gürkan and Erdal İnönü , chairman of SODEP , agreed to the idea. On November 3, 1985, the two parties HP and SODEP merged to form the social democrat Halkçı Parti (SHP) and elected Gürkan as chairman of the new party. In 1986, however, he was replaced by Erdal İnönü.
Gürkan was then deputy chairman of the new SHP and was elected to parliament in 1991 for the province of Mersin (then still province of İçel), and in 1995 for the province of Izmir . He was Minister for Labor and Social Affairs under Tansu Çiller during the DYP and SHP coalition in the 1990s . After the re-establishment of the CHP and the end of the SHP, he only became a passive member and later left the party. For a short time in 2002 Gürkan was a member of the Yeni Türkiye Partisi , but was no longer politically active there.
Aydın Güven Gürkan died on the morning of January 22, 2006 in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Istanbul to which he had recently been admitted. He had previously been treated for stomach cancer for three years. He had had a heart attack just a month earlier. He was buried in the cemetery in Istanbul's Tuzla district .
Gürkan was married to the film and theater actress Serap Aksoy . Gürkan has a daughter from his first marriage to the news anchor Ülkü Gürkan İmset.
