Tuzla ( Greek Ακρίτας Akritas ) is the capital of the district of the same name in the Turkish province of İstanbul and a district on the Asian side of İstanbul . Tuzla has 221,620 inhabitants (as of 2014).
history
The place was already inhabited during the Byzantine period under the name Akritas (Ακρίτας) and was conquered by Sultan Yıldırım Beyazıt in 1400 . The last Greek inhabitants were exchanged for Turks from Thessaloniki and Kavala at the end of the First World War . The population, which was little more than 1,000 in World War II , exceeded 200,000 in 2005.
Economy and Infrastructure
The formerly dominant agriculture and fishing lost their importance due to the industrialization of the place. Tuzla is best known for the shipbuilding yards located there and the Formula 1 racetrack that opened in 2005 .
Sports
The local soccer club Tuzlaspor , founded in 1954, has played in the Istanbul amateur leagues since it was founded. In the summer of 2013, the club won the championship in the Boelgesel Amatoer Ligi (German: Regional Amateur League ) and thus through promotion to the TFF 3rd Lig , the fourth highest Turkish league, the first participation in Turkish professional football.
