Küçükçekmece is the capital of the district of the same name in the Turkish province of İstanbul and a district on the European side of İstanbul . Küçükçekmece has 748,398 inhabitants (as of 2014).
history
The settlement goes back to the ancient settlement Rhegion Rhegion ( Greek Ῥήγιον ).
geography
Küçükçekmece is a rather large, densely populated district in western Istanbul and was named after the adjacent lake of the same name. In 1987, a total of 27 districts (including the two villages Kayabaşı and Şamlar) split off from Bakırköy County. The current district boundary of Küçükçekmece came about after Avcılar was declared a district in 1992.
Küçükçekmeces area amounts to 118 km² with a beach of 7 km length. Istanbul's main airport, Ataturk Havalimanı, is in the immediate vicinity . The distance to the center of İstanbul is 23 km. Küçükçekmece is bordered by Bakırköy in the south, Avcılar in the west, Başakşehir in the north and Bahçelievler and Bağcılar in the east .
Küçükçekmece extends over a wide, flat area with only slight differences in height. From the shores of the sea and the lake into the center of the village, the height increases steadily and reaches 200 m on the northern elevations. The valleys have a rather striking and memorable shape.
The Küçükçekmece Lake is according to its morphology a true and typical lagoon type . It is one of the world's rare lagoon lakes and therefore a natural wonder. The Küçükçekmecesee has an area of 16 km² and is not particularly deep. It reaches its greatest depth at 20 m in the south.
The streams in this district are short, their courses are uneven and wild. Due to the rapid local growth and industrialization, a certain part of these streams is now located within residential and commercial areas, and these are increasingly becoming a means of transport for industrial and household sewage towards the sea.
population
The census on October 22, 2000 showed a population of 589,139, of which 1,004 were in the surrounding villages. The population growth is 0.66%. The quota of residents who are able to read and write is 80%.
