The Social Democratic People's Party ( Turkish Sosyaldemokrat Halk Partisi ), short "SHP" , was a left , social democratic party in Turkey . It was founded on May 24, 2002 by Murat Karayalçın . Karayalçın was previously mayor of Ankara from 1989 to 1993 and Turkish foreign minister from 1994 to 1995.

history

After his withdrawal from the CHP , he gathered a group of democratic and liberal socialists around him, with whom he founded the SHP. In 2004 he ran again for the post of mayor of Ankara, but was defeated by Melih Gökçek of the AKP . In 2004 the SHP formed an electoral alliance with the socialist ÖDP and the left, pro-Kurdish party DTP . She succeeded in appointing the mayor of several cities with a majority Kurdish population. She did not take part in the 2007 elections in order not to split up the left too much. Until 2007 she had two MPs in the Turkish National Assembly .

Former party chairman Murat Karayalçın has rejoined the CHP and ran for the post of Lord Mayor of Ankara in the local elections in March 2009 . He was again subject to the incumbent Melih Gökçek.

At a party congress on March 13, 2010, the SHP decided to unite with the Eşitlik ve Demokrasi Partisi (EDP) and to take over their name.
