Dengir Mir Mehmet Fırat (born August 8, 1943 in Kâhta / Adıyaman Province , † July 11, 2019 in Ankara ) was a Turkish lawyer and politician of Kurdish origin . Fırat was a member of the Turkish Grand National Assembly and deputy chairman of the Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi .

He graduated from Ankara University Law School . Fırat worked as a farmer, freelance lawyer and exporter. He was a board member of Akdeniz İhracatçılar Birliği (Union of Mediterranean Exporters ), a founding member of the AKP and vice chairman. Before he helped found the AKP, he was active in the Justice Party and the Right Path Party. He was an MP for Adıyaman in the 21st legislature, for Mersin in the 22nd legislature and for Adana in the 23rd legislature. In 2000 he stood for the state presidential election as a member of the Fazilet Partisi . At the end of July 2014, he left the AKP. He had two children with his German wife.

He caused a stir when he said in an interview with The New York Times :

"The Ataturk Revolutions caused trauma in society, they abolished the religious way of life overnight."

For the parliamentary elections in June 2015 , he joined the Halkların Demokratik Partisi in mid-February 2015 to run for the Mersin province. There he again succeeded in entering the House of Representatives. Fırat died on July 11, 2019 at the age of 75 in Ankara of complications from lung cancer .

Dengir Mir Mehmet Fırat came from a politically active family. According to Dengir Fırat, his grandfather Hacı Bedir Fırat Ağa, like other Kurdish clan chiefs, was asked in 1919 by the British major Edward William Charles Noel for assistance in arresting Ataturk on behalf of the Istanbul government. But Hacı Bedir Fırat Ağa refused and sided with Ataturk. His grandfather was later MP for Malatyas in the 1st and 2nd legislative periods. Despite Ismet Inönü's decree that illiterate people cannot become MPs, the grandfather became a MP for Kars in the 3rd legislative period because of his support for Ataturk.

His uncle Hüseyin Fehmi Fırat was a three-time MP and member of the Democratic Party leadership . His uncle, M. Sırrı Turanlı, was Adıyaman Senator from 1957 to 1960. Another uncle named Ali Avni Turanlı was a deputy from Adıyaman from 1963 to 1973.

The name Dengir means big voice in Persian and Kurdish , Mîr is the Kurdish word for Lord . Mir Mehmet was the name of an ancestor 19 generations ago. Fırat was distantly related to Sheikh Said's family. According to an interview, Fırat only learned Kurdish as a student in 1964.
