history
The name of the place is the Dinkel , which flows in an arc about 1.5 kilometers west of Overdinkel towards the north.
Like the nearby cities of Enschede , Nordhorn and Gronau , Overdinkel was shaped by the textile industry, which offered many jobs from the second third of the 19th century to the 1970s. At the beginning of the era, the workforce came to Overdinkel mainly from Friesland and Drenthe . In 1907 the village already had 1,600 inhabitants. The newcomers brought the Dutch Reformed or Protestant denomination to the traditionally Catholic area. The Catholic Church was built in 1907 and the Dutch Reformed Church in 1909.
The Catholic Church is dedicated to Saint Gerardus Majella , of whom a relic is kept in the church. Every year since 1912 there has been a procession in honor of the saint (on the 1st Sunday after October 16, the day of remembrance of St. Gérard).
