Depiction of the Ruchnama on a Turkmen coin

The Ruhnama or Ruchnama ( pers .: "Book of the Soul") is a book that is said to have been written by the former Turkmen head of state and government, Saparmyrat Nyýazow . It was officially required reading for the people. It was published in September 2001 and is a mixture of history, rules of conduct and praise to the "Scriptures". The contents are taught in schools in Turkmenistan and serve the personality cult around Nyýazow. A second volume of the Ruhnama was published in autumn 2004.

The Ruhnama was compulsory reading in all schools until the end of 2006 and the teaching it contained had to make up a quarter of the lessons. Civil servants had to read this book every Saturday. Even for the driver's license and for exams in schools and universities, knowledge of the content is necessary.

As part of his personality cult , Nyýazow had a copy of the Ruhnama transported into space in 2005 . There, wrapped in the state flag, it was to circle the earth forever. The package with the COSPAR designation 2005-031C mounted on the upper stage of a Dnepr rocket is expected to burn up in the earth's atmosphere in 2132 . He also had a nine-meter-high monument erected in the center of the Turkmen capital Ashgabat, the Ruhnama Monument .

The Ruhnama was translated into 40 languages - DaimlerChrysler submitted the German translation of the first part in 2003, the second part came from Siemens . The construction company Bouygues arranged the French translation, the Çalık Holding arranged the translation into Turkish and English. The translations helped the companies to get orders in Turkmenistan.
