Culture and sights

Buildings

The Protestant St. George Church was rebuilt between 1651 and 1652 on the site of a church damaged in the Thirty Years War in 1630. There is still a bell from the old church, it is kept in the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum . The inscription shows that it dates from 1580.

From a coat of arms attached to the side of the church, one learns that the construction cost 761 guilders. The main sponsors were:

The church was " ... built here without the slightest contribution from the inhabitants, but they mostly helped diligently with handling and procurement of materials, especially which horses have ... " The residents named on the coat of arms with assistance still exist today the families Appun, Garburg, Just, Mackensen and Millies in Herrhausen.

The St. George Church faces east and is made of rubble stones. A wooden offering box dates from 1645. For both world wars, the bells had to be given up and were melted down. Today's bell dates from 1947 and was donated by two families out of gratitude for their sons returning from the war.
