Esmedya

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Esmedya is a Turkish media company owned by entrepreneur Ethem Sancak , based in Istanbul . The daily newspapers published by Esmedya have a combined circulation of around 310,000 copies per day (as of January 2017). These newspapers and the radio and television stations belonging to the media group openly support President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Justice and Recovery Party (AKP).

Ownership

The company was founded in 2005 by Ethem Sancak under the name Türkmedya. After the sale or discontinuation of the media owned by the group, the group effectively ceased to exist in 2009. In 2013 he reconstituted himself when Sancak acquired the media formerly owned by Çukurova Holding (the daily newspapers Akşam and Güneş , the television station Skyturk 360 as well as radio stations and magazines) for 62 million US dollars from the state trust company TMSF . At the beginning of 2016, the newspaper Star and the broadcaster 24 were purchased and Türkmedya was renamed Esmedya.

Proximity to the Turkish government

Sancak's career as an entrepreneur is closely tied to Erdoğan's rule; Sancak himself characterized his relationship with Erdoğan as "divine love between men". Sancak is also a partner in the Turkish arms company BMC . In opposition media there are repeated allegations that Sancak is being favored by the Turkish government.
