Ece Temelkuran (born July 22, 1973 in Izmir ) is a Turkish lawyer , journalist and writer .

Life

Ece Temelkuran studied law at Ankara University . Since graduating from law school in 1995, she has published twelve books, including the novels Muz sesleri ( The Voice of the Bananas , 2010) and Düğümlere üfleyen kadınlar ( What good is the revolution to me if I can't dance , 2014). Her book Ağrının Derinliği (2008, 2010 in English under the title Deep Mountain, Across the Turkish-Armenian Divide ) deals with the tense relationship between the two nations after the genocide of the Armenians . Her work Book of the Edge (2010, original title: Kıyı kitabı , 2002) has also been published in English .

She wrote as a columnist for the daily newspapers Milliyet (2000–2009) and Habertürk (2009–2011) and presented her own series on Habertürk TV (2010 and 2011). She lost her job at Habertürk after her critical articles about the Turkish government's handling of the killing of more than 30 Kurdish civilians by Turkish fighter jets on December 28, 2011 on the Turkish-Iraqi border ( Uludere incident). In 2013 she became editor-in-chief of the left-wing daily BirGün for a few months .

Ece Temelkuran has received numerous awards for her journalistic work, including the Pen for Peace Award (2001). Her articles have appeared in the international press, including The Guardian and Le Monde Diplomatique .

Like other Turkish journalists who criticize the policies of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan , Ece Temelkuran publishes her articles on internet platforms and in the BirGün newspaper . Her work on the protests in Turkey in 2013 has been translated into numerous languages. In June 2013, at the invitation of Labor MP Seema Malhotra, Ece Temelkuran informed the British House of Commons about the protests around Istanbul's Gezi Park .

After the attempted coup in Turkey in 2016, she complained about the lack of knowledge about the Islamist Gülen movement , which she described as one of the main problems in Turkey "since the 1970s", which created the political climate in Turkey and even left and right Got liberals on their side.

In order to avoid possible government repression , she has been living in exile in Zagreb since the end of 2016 . Regarding the outcome of the constitutional referendum, she said: "Erdoğan has once again succeeded in creating a mood through the conscious use of enemy images, threats and untruths, in which people have now even voted for a system that will harm them."
