An armed criminal broke into the Reina nightclub , one of the largest and most famous clubs in Istanbul. He shot a policeman and a civilian at the entrance, thereby gaining entry. There were 700 to 800 visitors in the restaurant, 37 of whom were killed. Numerous foreigners are among the fatalities. Some club goers jumped into the adjacent Bosporus and were rescued there by the police.

Investigations

The Turkish interior minister, Süleyman Soylu , announced immediately after the attack that they were "looking for a terrorist". According to eyewitnesses, the perpetrator spoke Arabic. The Governor of Istanbul Vasip Şahin confirmed that it was a terrorist attack. The perpetrator was armed with a long gun. According to the Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım , the perpetrator or perpetrators mingled with the refugees and was initially able to escape undetected. At the crime scene were fingerprints and passport of the perpetrator found. Istanbul police have arrested a total of 50 suspects since January 2, 2017.

On January 16, 2017, the alleged perpetrator was arrested in Istanbul along with four other suspects, three women from Egypt, Senegal and Somalia, and an Iraqi. He and his four-year-old son are said to have hid in an apartment in the Esenyurt district of a friend and had two more weapons and almost $ 200,000 in cash at hand. According to media reports from the state news agency Anadolu Ajansı , the man comes from Uzbekistan , is of Kyrgyz origin and entered Turkey via Syria .

The suspect, 34-year-old Abdulgadir Mascharipov , had already entered Turkey illegally in January 2016 under the code name Ebu Muhammed Horasani Abdulkavi and made a confession on January 17, 2017.

backgrounds

Commitment to the attack

Allegedly, the Islamic State (IS) is committed to the attack on the nightclub. A "soldier of the caliphate " is mentioned as the perpetrator in a statement posted on the Internet .

Security situation before the attack

There were three IS attacks in Istanbul in 2016: one on January 12 (death of twelve German tourists), an IS suicide attack on an Istanbul shopping street on March 19 and the attack on Istanbul Airport on June 28, 2016 .

The owner of the Reina , Mehmet Koçarslan, announced shortly after the attack that American intelligence services had drawn attention to a possible attack on his club, whereupon tightened security precautions had been taken. However, the US embassy denied an explicit attack warning for the Reina , saying that only general warnings had been given. Club Reina is around 100 meters away from a main police station.

Because of the generally tense security situation due to previous terrorist attacks in the metropolis, around 17,000 police officers were on duty in Istanbul on New Year's Eve, according to media reports. The German embassy in Turkey recommended that Germans "responsibly examine participation in public events and festivities on New Year's Eve and New Year".

New Years Eve in Turkey

New Years Eve celebrations were introduced by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1932. In 1935 January 1st became a public holiday. Since the 1990s, with the rise of political Islam, New Year's Eve celebrations, which have also incorporated elements of the Christian Christmas festival , have increasingly been pushed back as an “un-Islamic” custom.

The Turkish religious authority had given the mosques it controlled a sermon on the Friday before New Year's Eve, in which New Year's Eve celebrations were portrayed as an un-Islamic sin. The Millî Gazete newspaper , for example, had a headline: “This day is the last day. This warning is the final warning! Don't celebrate! ”. Government critics accused the religious authorities and these newspapers of inciting the attack. Various Turkish organizations filed criminal charges against Mehmet Görmez , the head of the state religious authority. On January 1, 2017, Görmez condemned the act of terrorism, speculating that it was intended to cause uproar between people with different lifestyles.

Previous terrorist attacks in Turkey

There were a total of 20 terrorist attacks in Turkey in 2016. Among other things, 44 people were killed in a bomb attack in the vicinity of the Vodafone Arena on December 10, 2016, also in Beşiktaş .

Used on April 6, 2017

While trying to arrest him, American special forces killed a man with the code name Abdurakhmon Uzbeki , an IS functionary from Tajikistan and a confidante of IS chief al-Baghdadi on the road between al-Mayadin and ar-Raqqa in Syria on April 6, 2017 . He is considered to be one of the planners of the January 1st attack.
