The bomb attack in Istanbul on March 19, 2016 left five people dead and 39 injured.

Sequence of events

A suicide attack was committed in the center of the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul at 11:00 a.m. local time on March 19, 2016 . The explosion occurred on the central shopping street İstiklal Caddesi in the European district of Beyoğlu , not far from Taksim Square . "A 33-year-old Turk who is said to have been an IS fighter" was identified as the attacker. He was recognized on images from a surveillance camera before the commission of the crime and, due to the heavy police presence on site, he did not achieve his actual goal. In a panic reaction, he detonated the explosive device prematurely in the shopping street, which was not very busy at the time. A DNA report should provide complete clarity about the identity of the perpetrator , for which family members of the alleged assassin have already provided the investigative bodies with hair and saliva samples. This confirmed Mehmet Özturk, who was born in Gaziantep near the border with Syria in 1992, as the perpetrator.

Victim

Five people were killed and another 39 people were injured , according to the Turkish Ministry of Health . According to the Turkish news agency Doğan , at least twelve foreigners and two children were among the injured.

Reactions

Shortly after the attack, the Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu called a security conference . The anti-Semitic recovery wishes of the AKP's press spokeswoman at the time , Irem Aktas via Twitter , who wished all Israeli injured people an early death immediately after the attack became known , caused some diplomatic upheaval . She was immediately removed from office and Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was outraged by the omissions.

In the afternoon, the Federal Foreign Office issued a limited travel warning recommending avoiding local public transport, public spaces, tourist attractions and crowds in the whole of Istanbul in the following days.

The German consulate general in Istanbul, the embassy in Ankara and the German schools in both cities were closed as a precaution.

Five other suspects were arrested on March 19, 2016. On March 23, 2016, three more arrests were made in connection with the attack.
