Al-Mayadin ( Arabic الميادين, DMG al-Mayādīn ), also (al-) Majadin , is a small town in eastern Syria in the Deir ez-Zor governorate .

Al-Mayadin is located on the right (southern) bank of the Euphrates , 12 kilometers below the confluence of the Chabur and 45 kilometers southeast of Deir ez-Zor on the main road towards Abu Kamal on the Iraqi border. According to an estimate, the city had 48,922 inhabitants in 2003, and 70,162 inhabitants were calculated for 2010. The region belongs to the Syrian desert with less than 120 millimeters of annual precipitation. The little precipitation falls in the winter months. Here agriculture is only possible in an irrigated strip along the Euphrates. Even grazing areas for nomad cattle are rare.

In 1875 the place had about 1000 inhabitants whose livelihood was agriculture (corn, wheat, barley) and semi-nomadic sheep breeding. Wool and butter were brought to Aleppo by donkeys. At the 1932 census there were 2532 residents, some of whom were Christians. For 1970, 15,000 inhabitants were estimated.

About four kilometers southwest, across the main road, you can see the ruins of Qalʿat ar-Rahba from the 12th century on a hill .

Syrian civil war

In the later course of the civil war in Syria, the city developed into a retreat for the Sunni - Islamist militia Islamic State .

In the night from May 25 to May 26, 2017, there were air strikes in al-Mayadin, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights . These were for members of the IS. At least 106 people died in these attacks. IS functionary Baraa Kadek is also said to have been killed in the attacks on al-Mayadin. According to US sources, ISIS chief cleric Turki al-Binali also died in the course of an air strike on al-Mayadin a week later .

On October 14, 2017, the city was recaptured by IS following a Russian air force-backed offensive by the Syrian army.

On November 1, 2018, the Syrian news agency SANA reported the discovery of a warehouse with 450,000 cartridges of the 7.62 × 51 mm NATO caliber from US production in the city.
