As a result of the terrorist attack in Istanbul on January 12, 2016 at 10:20 a.m. EET (UTC + 2) on Sultan Ahmed Square at the obelisk of Thutmose III. 12 people were killed and 13 injured. A year earlier, a Chechen suicide bomber with ties to IS had carried out an explosives attack there.
Sequence of events
The assassin blew himself up in the midst of a group of German tourists on the busy square between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque .
According to the Turkish domestic intelligence service MIT , two unspecific terrorist warnings dated December 17, 2015 and January 4, 2016, about which the government in Ankara was informed, had already been issued before the offense .
Victim
Eleven fatalities were German nationals and belonged to a travel group of 33 members who were traveling in Istanbul and then wanted to travel on to Dubai and Abu Dhabi . Among the victims are a retired couple from Falkensee , a couple from Berlin , two men and a woman from Rhineland-Palatinate , a Peruvian, a woman and two men from Saxony and a woman from Westerngrund were killed.
Perpetrator
According to the Turkish government, the attacker is said to have been Nabil F., who was born in Saudi Arabia . According to the Turkish government , the 28-year-old is said to have been a member of the Islamic State terrorist organization . According to a statement from the Doğan Haber Ajansı press agency , he had entered Turkey from Syria shortly before the attack . On January 5, 2016, he registered as a refugee in Istanbul. He could therefore be identified using his fingerprints and a passport found. The identity of the perpetrator has not yet been clarified beyond doubt, as the passport could also be false.
Reactions
After the attack, the Turkish government imposed a news blackout . The media regulator RTÜK announced that the blackout was for national security .
On January 13, 2016, Federal Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière and Ahmet Davutoğlu , Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey , visited the victims of the attack in Istanbul. Your condolences spoke u. a. Ban Ki-moon and François Hollande .
