Hürriyet Daily News is the oldest and currently the second largest English-language daily newspaper in Turkey.
overview
It was founded in 1961 by the former Cumhuriyet journalist İlhan Çevik (1926 - 2009). The newspaper was initially called the Daily News and, from the late 1960s, the Turkish Daily News .
In 2000, the Doğan media group , which includes the daily newspapers Hürriyet and Posta , acquired the majority of the shares in the newspaper. In 2004 İlnur Çevik, long-time editor-in-chief and son of the newspaper founder, left the editorial team; In 2006, the editorial team was brought closer together with Hürriyet , and in November 2008 the newspaper was finally renamed Hürriyet Daily News and Economic Review . The addition and Economic Review was later dropped ; today the newspaper appears only under the name Hürriyet Daily News . In the title head it bears the motto "Leading News Source for Turkey and the Region" ("Leading News Source for Turkey and the Region").
Murat Yetkin has been the editor-in-chief since August 2011 .
The closer connection between the two papers is also noticeable in the comments: Yetkin's columns also appear in Turkish in the Hürriyet , while comments by Hürriyet authors such as Ahmet Hakan , Ertuğrul Özkök or Abdulkadir Selvi , albeit irregularly, in English in the Hürriyet Daily News appear. Because the newspaper is often quoted by correspondents from foreign media, it is more influential than a mere look at the circulation figures suggests.
