The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble is a music group founded in Utrecht in 2000 .

history

The group, often abbreviated to TKDE, was founded in 2000 as a project by Jason Köhnen ( Bong-Ra ) and Gideon Kiers ( Telcosystems ) to compose music for well-known silent films such as Nosferatu and Metropolis . Köhnen and Kiers had previously successfully studied at the Utrecht School of Arts . In 2004 the trombonist Hilary Jeffery and the cellist Nina Hitz were added to the until then purely electronic music project . As a quartet, the group released their self-titled debut album in 2006. For the subsequent tour, the group was supplemented by the singer Charlotte Cegarra and the guitarist Eelco Bosman. All members of the international group have lived in the Netherlands since 2007 . In the same year the musicians founded The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation as a side project specializing in improvisational music. The violinist Sadie Anderson joined in 2008. The 2011 album From the Stairwell was financed through a crowdfunding campaign. Since 2016, all Denovali albums have been reissued piece by piece.

style

The group plays a mix of jazz , doom metal , ambient and post-rock called Dark Jazz . The group's music is often compared to that of Bohren and the Club of Gore . On Schallgrenzen.de the music is described as “head music influenced by jazz” and “music for films that have never been made”. The terms noir-jazz , experimental , improvisation , dub and avant-garde are used to narrow down the classification. On Denovali.com the music is described as having a cinematic influence, TKDE is primarily concerned with the conveyed mood. On Nocleansinging.com, Alain Mower describes the music as metal music without any metal elements. According to this assessment, the group is frequently reviewed by magazines and websites devoted to Doom and Extreme Metal .

According to Köhnen, however, the musical influence of the group extends from “ classical music to jazz, metal and electronic music ”. A concrete direct influence is difficult to identify and the musicians were inspired by all kinds of music. The audience at performances by the group is also not limited to a narrow circle of style-related music recipients. Rather, the audience consisted of different groups with different musical preferences. Another important influencing factor, Köhnen, like most reviewers, is the influence of films, which the group sometimes uses as background music for their appearances. Köhnen names the filmmakers Brothers Quay , Jan Švankmajer and Béla Tarr as important sources of inspiration.
