The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation is a side project founded in 2007 in Utrecht by the members of the Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble .

Relationship with The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble

The MFDJC abbreviated project only publishes completely improvised recordings and serves the musicians as a direct counterpart to the Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, whose working method is determined by a linear composition . The naming serves as a humorous allusion to the main project; after Jason Köhnen, comparable elements were selected for this. According to him, "[it] could just as well have been THE HIMALAYAN DRONEJAZZ ORCHESTRA."

history

The idea for this project arose when the musicians of the Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble wanted to devote themselves entirely to improvisation music with a side project, initially only to devote themselves to the creative process. No album releases were originally planned. However, early appearances of the group have already been documented, so that an appearance on February 24, 2007 in the Amsterdam Overtoom 301 in June of the same year as the first album Doomjazz Future Corpses! was published via Ad Noiseam .

In the following years the group performed internationally and documented various appearances as further publications in different line-ups. Jason Köhnen and Gideon Kiers appeared as the smallest unit, and other guest musicians joined the musicians of the Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble at other appearances. The loosely collectivist form of the group influences the music with each new line-up as much as the locations, the audience and the personal mood of the musicians. Since 2017, all Denovali albums have been reissued piece by piece.

style

The group plays a mix of jazz , doom metal , ambient , drone doom and post-rock known as dark jazz , doom jazz , horror jazz or drone jazz , for which Bohren and the Club of Gore are particularly known. After Lie in the Sound , an “avant-garde ambient note” is in the foreground of the musical concept. The ongoing improvisation is redesigned depending on the group constellation, location and audience. “With all this variance in detail, what is a solid bank are the references to jazz (aka improvisation [...]) and doom anchored in the band's name, not ostensibly to be equated with black heavyness but rather with a dark to very dark atmosphere shapes the individual pieces. ”The core constellation of the group consisting of Köhnen and Kiers plays exclusively electronic music . The music is usually supplemented by instruments such as a cello , violin or singing . According to Köhnen, the use of drums has a particular influence on the music of the group. In their improvisations, the band succeeds in "working with pure soundscapes and bringing them into interaction with one another, creating rhythms that absorb and carry the stream of sound."
