It came to a car bomb attack on a manned police bus of the riot police. At the entrance to nearby Maçka Park , about 45 seconds after the explosion, a man with a large backpack blew himself up after a police patrol was about to inspect him because of the previous car bomb attack. After the attack, the most important streets and squares were cordoned off and several checkpoints were set up. Immediately thereafter, the Turkish broadcasting supervisory authority RTÜK imposed a temporary ban on information, with the exception of official state statements.
Numan Kurtulmuş , one of the deputy prime ministers in the Yıldırım government , said that everything indicates that the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) was behind the attack. Shortly afterwards, the Kurdish terrorist organization Teyrêbazên Azadîya Kurdistan ( Freedom Falcons of Kurdistan ) assumed responsibility for the bombings in a letter of responsibility.

Several prosecutors were hired to investigate the attacks. Shortly afterwards, 13 people were arrested who were suspected of being involved in the bombings.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan officially confirmed the death toll in a statement on December 11, 2016 at 1.30 a.m. local time. He condemned the attacks in the strongest possible terms and blamed Turkey’s enemies such as the PKK , the Gülen movement and the Islamic State .
