Şeref Görkey (born December 3, 1914 in Istanbul ; † November 10, 2004 there ) was a Turkish football player , coach and official. Through his many years of work for Beşiktaş Istanbul and as his home-grown man, he is strongly associated with this club and is referred to by club and fan sites as a legendary striker in the club's history. During his time in Beşiktaş he played with legendary players for the club such as Hakkı Yeten , Eşref Bilgiç , Hüseyin Saygun , Hüsnü Savman , İbrahim Tusder , Feyzi Uman and Şükrü Gülesin and was an important part of the team that formed in the years 1933 to In 1950 he was able to win the most important title in Turkish football nine times with the Istanbul championship , five of them in a row. During this time he broke a number of club records and is behind his long-time teammate Hakkı Yeten the second most successful goalscorer in the club's history. Görkey, who achieved great fame within Turkish football mainly through his numerous volley goals , was known as Voleci Şeref (English: Şeref, the volleyball player ). Every year on the day of his death, Beşiktaş's club officials and supporters hold a prayer at his grave .
Player career
society
Görkey started playing football in the Istanbul district of Nişantaşı and joined the youth department of Beşiktaş Istanbul at the age of 16 . For the 1930/31 season he was included in the squad of the Beşiktaş 'football team. He came in this season in the game of İstanbul Ligi (dt. Istanbul League ) on December 26, 1930 against Vefa Istanbul to use and made his professional debut. Since there was no international professional league in Turkey at that time, regional leagues existed instead in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir , of which İstanbul Ligi (also called İstanbul Futbol Ligi) was considered the most renowned. In the further course of the season he completed five more league games and scored four goals. This made him one of the club's most successful goal scorers in his first season. While he did not get beyond a reserve role in his second season, he captured a regular place with the 1932/33 season.
After he had remained without a title for three seasons with his club, he was able to win the Istanbul championship with her in the 1933/34 season . Despite this first title, Görkey and his team did not win a title in the next four seasons. It was not until the 1938/39 season that he and his team won the championship of the Istanbul Football League. In the following four years, Görkey and his team managed to defend their title in the Istanbul championship four times. This made him a member of the team that broke several league records. In addition, the Milli Küme was won in the 1940/41 season , a kind of championship in which the teams from the three cities of Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir participated. Görkey was one of the most important performers in all these seasons and was at times the most successful goalscorer of his team. In the 1944/45 season he was able to win the Istanbul championship again with his club and defend it in the following season. Görkey lost his regular place in the 1946/47 season. His club went away empty-handed in the Istanbul championship this season and was able to win the Ministry of Education Cup.
In the summer of 1947 Görkey moved to league rivals İstanbulspor . After he was more of a reservist here, he returned to Beşiktaş after his season. Here, too, he only made sporadic missions in two seasons. After he was able to bring the Istanbul championship of the 1949/50 season with his club , he ended his career.
National team
Görkey began his national team career in 1931 with a commitment for the Turkish national team in a friendly against the Yugoslav national team . With this encounter, in which he scored a goal, he completed his first and only international match. Although Görkey was one of the most successful goal scorers of the 1930s and 1940s in Turkish football , he was no longer used in the national team.
Trainer and functionary career
In the summer of 1952 the İstanbul Futbol Ligi was dissolved and continued with the transfer to a professional league system, henceforth under the newly founded league İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League ). Görkey began in November 1952 to look after the club Adalet SK , which is active in this Istanbul professional league, as head coach and worked here for two seasons.
For the 1955/56 season of this league he then took over Beykozspor and worked here for the next three and a half years. He built up this club continuously during this time and reached 4th place in the table with him in the 1956/57 season. In addition to his work at Beykozspor, Görkey began to train the Turkish B national team from February 1957, the then second selection of the Turkish national team, and looked after them until the end of May 1957. In September 1957 Görkey resigned from his position as head coach at Beykozspor. After being out of action for three months, he took over his previous club, Adalet SK, in January 1958. As early as March 1958, he resigned from his position after some club officials had interfered in his coaching activities.
In September 1959 he was appointed head coach of the Turkish national team of amateurs and was supposed to prepare them for the Mediterranean Games to be held next October . During this tournament he was the silver medalist behind the Italian selection. He then led the amateur national team through qualifying for the 1960 Summer Olympics and, thanks to a rule change by FIFA , reached them. During the summer games, he and his team were eliminated from the tournament as the bottom of the group.
After the Summer Olympics, he began to coach the Turkish B national team again. In addition to his work for the B national team, his old club Beşiktaş Istanbul offered him the post of manager. After the Turkish Football Association had agreed to work at Beşiktaş, Görkey began working for Beşiktaş as a manager from November 1960, parallel to his work for the Turkish B national team. After the head coach Sandro Puppo at Beşiktaş at the end of the 1960/61 season health could not continue his office Görkey replaced him interim until the end of the season and was third in the table with the club.
From December 1961 he was also appointed head coach of the Turkish U-23 national team.
In June 1962 he took over the Beykozspor club for the third time as head coach. In September 1962 he was appointed head coach of the Turkish national team and continued this activity parallel to his work at Beykozspor.
In mid-January 1963, he was introduced to Vefa Istanbul as the new head coach, thereby inheriting Galip Haktanır . In March he separated again from Vefa and trained the Turkish amateur national team. For the 1963/64 season he began to train the club Feriköy SK .
In October 1964 he began to train Beykozspor again and worked here until February 1965. From September 1966 he began to train the Turkish U-21 national team. In addition, he began to work as an assistant coach for the Turkish national team from the spring of 1968.
In February 1972, Görkey İstanbulspor took over as head coach. After just four match days, he left Istanbulspor and was replaced by Bahattin Baydar .

Görkey died on November 10, 2004 in Istanbul . He was buried in the famous Zincirlikuyu cemetery one day later after the midday prayer in Istanbul's Teşvikiye Mosque .
