Özkan Sümer (born January 20, 1937 in Trabzon ) is a former Turkish football player , coach and official. His name is very strongly associated with the Trabzonspor association and he is regarded as one of the most important personalities in the club's history. He worked for the club as a player, coach and club president. He was next to Ahmet Suat Özyazıcı , with whom he replaced himself several times as head coach, the second coach of the legendary Trabzonspor team, which was the first Anatolian club to win the Turkish championship and under the nickname Karadeniz Fırtınası (Black Sea Storm) from 1975 for a decade the Turkish football dominated.
Player career
Sumer began his active career at Trabzon İdmanocağı , one of the three predecessor clubs from which the later Trabzonspor emerged . After this merger and Trabzonspor's first participation in the league from the summer of 1967, he was part of the founding squad of this club. He also played for the clubs DÇ Karabükspor and Sebat Gençlik SK and ended his career in the first half of the 1970s.
Coaching career
After his active career, Sümer worked in the youth departments of the Turkish Football Association and Trabzonspors.
In the summer of 1978 Sumer finally took over the 1st team Trabzonspor for the first time. In the 1978/79 and 1980/81 seasons he was Turkish champion with Trabzonspor . From March 25, 1981 to April 15, 1981 Sümer was the coach of the Turkish national soccer team . Within a month Turkey lost two out of two games under his leadership and he resigned with immediate effect.
Galatasaray Istanbul signed him for the 1982/83 season . His goal was to make Galatasaray a master again after ten years. He did not succeed in this and was therefore fired after one season.
For the 19887/88 season he took over the Central Anatolian second division club Konyaspor . At the end of the season, he confidently led this club to the first second division championship and thus also to the first ascent in the club's history to the first league , the highest Turkish division at the time. Sümer took over the coaching position at Trabzonspor in 1984/85, 1990/91 and 1998 again, but without success. From 2000 to 2003 Özkan Sümer was President of Trabzonspor.
Since 2006, Sümer has been sighting young players from the Trabzon area on behalf of Trabzonspor.
