James Donnelly (born January 3, 1893 in Ballina , County Mayo , † 1959 ) was an Irish football player and coach .

Career

As a player or player-coach

Donnelly served in the First World War the Royal Artillery in France , the artillery -arm the British Army . He was already playing football there with his comrades. After the First World War he continued his career with the Blackburn Rovers and moved to Accrington Stanley in 1922 . He later played for Southend United , FC Brentford and Thames AFC before continuing his career in Croatia (then Yugoslavia) and moving to 1. HŠK Građanski , the predecessor of Dinamo Zagreb. Already at HŠK Građanski he was chosen as player-coach after the departure of Jesza Poszony , who led the team to win the championship before Donnelly's arrival.

By the time Donnelly took over the team, the club had already lost many of its key players due to financial problems. The season finally turned into a disaster for Donnelly, so he was able to lead his team to the cup final, but was relegated to last place after the end of the season. In the second division, the immediate return to third place succeeded, but Donnelly had to vacate his place after this season, because the system with which Donnelly played (namely the Swiss bar , a defensive tactic) led to a loss of viewers.

After his engagement in Central Europe he returned to England for the 1932/33 season and moved to Thames AFC . He finally let his career end in the Turkish second division with Güneş SK , which he ended in 1935.

As a trainer

In January 1935 he received an offer from Fenerbahçe Istanbul , which he also accepted. With Fenerbahçe Donnelly was champion in the 1934/35 season of the Istanbul Ligi , which was probably the strongest league in Turkey at the time.

The 1935/36 season was similarly successful, in which he led the club from Kadıköy again to win the championship. A 6-1 home win against arch-rivals Galatasaray Istanbul on February 23, 1936 will not be forgotten . At the end of the season, Fenerbahçe had scored 65 points and won the championship nine points behind Galatasaray.

Due to his success, Donnelly was appointed in 1936 for the coaching post of the Turkish national team, which he also followed. In addition to his new commitment, he continued to coach Fenerbahçe. He made his debut as coach of Turkey in July 1936 in a friendly against Yugoslavia , which took place in the Taksim Stadium and was attended by 8,000 spectators. The game ended 3: 3. A month later he took part with Turkey in the 1936 Summer Olympics , which took place in Berlin . The Summer Olympics ended disappointingly for Turkey, losing 4-0 to Norway in the first round.

After the disappointing performance of the Turkish national team at the Summer Olympics, Donnelly then looked after the team in a 3-1 defeat against Yugoslavia in a friendly game, after which he stopped working for the national team and only trained Fenerbahçe from then on. With Fenerbahçe, he won the title twice more in 1937 and 1938. James Donnelly won five titles for Fenerbahçe, making him one of the most successful coaches in the club's history.
