Accrington Stanley (officially: Accrington Stanley Football Club ) was a football club from the city of Accrington in the north-west of England .

history

The club was founded under the name Stanley Villa by young men who lived on Stanley Street, Accrington, probably in 1891. While the city at that time had a professional club with Accrington FC playing in the Football League, Stanley played initially only friendlies. For the 1894/95 season, Accrington FC had left the Football League for financial reasons and dissolved completely in 1896, joining the local Accrington & District League , and in 1893 they had already renamed Accrington Stanley . In 1900 they joined the Lancashire Combination and belonged to it until 1921, in 1903 and 1906 they won the championship there. When the Football League was expanded to include the Football League Third Division North in 1921 , Accrington Stanley successfully applied for admission and the city had a football club in the Football League again after 28 years.

Accrington Stanley belonged continuously to the Third Division North until 1958, after the merger of the third-class North and South Seasons, the club qualified for the new single-track Third Division , but was relegated to the Fourth Division in 1960 . Got into financial difficulties, the club had to stop playing during the 1961/62 season in March 1962. Nevertheless, a continuation of the game operations in the Lancashire Combination, before you also left there in 1966 for financial reasons from the current league operations and the club was finally dissolved.

In 1968 a new club was founded under the same name , which made it to the Football League in 2006.
