The Taksim Stadium ( Turkish Taksim Stadyumu ) on Taksim Square in Istanbul was the first football stadium in the Beyoğlu district . It was the venue and home stadium of several Istanbul soccer clubs, such as Beşiktaş Istanbul , Galatasaray Istanbul and Fenerbahçe Istanbul .

history

Originally there was a barracks built around 1780 for the Topçu artillery troops of the Ottoman army . After a major fire, it was rebuilt in 1806 as Topçu barracks or Halil Pascha Topçu barracks ( Turkish Taksim Kışlası or Halil Paşa Topçu Kışlası ). This was badly damaged after a coup by the Turkish military in 1903 and then lost its military importance. The Turkish state sold the entire area of the barracks in 1913 to the Turkish industrial and trading company Sanayi ve Ticaret Şirket-i Milliye-i Osmaniye .

The barracks courtyard was later converted into a soccer field and served as a playing field for soccer clubs such as Beşiktaş Istanbul , Galatasaray Istanbul and Fenerbahçe Istanbul . The redesigned barracks courtyard was also used for theater performances at that time. After the First World War , the French troops stationed in Istanbul and Senegalese soldiers from the French colonial areas took up residence in the Topçu barracks and also used the inner courtyard as a playing field. After their departure, the inner courtyard was converted into a football stadium.

The playing area of the former barracks yard was officially renamed the Taksim Stadium in 1921. The first official game of the Turkish national soccer team took place on October 26, 1923 as a friendly against Romania and ended in a 2-2 draw. It was the first game of the newly established Turkish Republic . The goals for the Turkish team scored the national player Zeki Rıza Sporel , who also scored the 4-2 victory for Turkey on June 17, 1924 in the game against Finland .

The building was in a desolate condition due to damage from the rebellion of 1903 and a long vacancy at the end of the 1930s. Due to a planned renovation, the city of Istanbul had the barracks, including the stadium and playing field, torn down by 1940 and a park was created on their areas. The urban Gezi Park created on the site was completed by 1951 .
