Güneş SK , also called Güneşspor , was a Turkish football club from Istanbul . The club was considered one of the strongest teams in Istanbul in the 1930s, and the highlight of the club's history was winning the Millî Küme in 1938 .

history

Güneş SK was founded in 1933 as Ateş-Güneş Spor Kulübü , Ateş-Güneş means fire-sun. The club was founded by former Galatasaray players after internal disputes broke out there. The initiator for the establishment was Yusuf Ziya Öniş , who had previously been President of Galatasaray for several years. Originally the association was supposed to be called Sarı-Kırmızı (German: Yellow-Red) , but this was discarded in order to avoid confusion with Galatasaray. Shortly after the founding of the association, it was changed to Güneş SK at Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's request .

In its short existence, Güneş SK was one of the most successful clubs in Istanbul and constantly played for the top places in the table. Güneş SK won the İstanbul Futbol Ligi in the 1937/38 season and the Milli Küme in the 1938 season. The club ended the latter very successfully, the season ended without defeat and seven points behind Beşiktaş Istanbul (Güneş SK had 41 points, Beşiktaş 34).

Subsequently, the club took part in the 1938/39 season of the İstanbul Futbol Ligi and continued its successful streak with three wins and a draw from the first four matchdays. Finally, the association suddenly announced the dissolution, the circumstances for this are not known.

Ataturk and Güneş SK

Since Güneş SK employed some functionaries who came from the immediate environment of the Turkish republic's founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, during discussions about which club Ataturk belonged to, the rumor kept coming up that he was a fan of Güneş SK. In fact, Ataturk felt a certain closeness to this club, this is confirmed, for example, by the renaming of the club, which was ordered by him. Whether Ataturk was a fan of Güneş SK, however, was never confirmed by himself, since as President he probably wanted to maintain neutrality - at least externally.
