Gündüz Kılıç (born January 1, 1918 in Istanbul , † May 17, 1980 in New York City ) was a Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of work for Galatasaray Istanbul , he is strongly associated with this association. On the fan and club side, he is seen as one of the most important players and coaches in club history. His nickname, by which he is still known today, is Baba (father) .
Career
As a player
Kılıç first came into contact with football as a student at Galatasaray High School . In 1934 Kılıç came to the first team and was used there as a center forward. In his first season (1935/36) the striker scored 16 goals in 12 games in the İstanbul Ligi . In the 1938/39 season he did not come to work because he went to Germany to study for a year . On June 30, 1940, Beşiktaş Istanbul and Galatasaray met . The result was after 90 minutes of play 9: 2 for the yellow-red ; five of the nine goals were from Gündüz Kılıç. Kılıç won his first title as a player in the 1941/42 season with the İstanbul Kupası (Istanbul Cup). The team was able to defend the title a year later. Due to his conscription , Kılıç moved to Ankara Demirspor for one season .
He then played for Galatasaray for another seven years. His last game as an active footballer was on May 3, 1952 against İstanbulspor .
For Turkey Kılıç played from 1936 to 1951. He came to 11 games and scored five goals, he also took part with the national team at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London . During the games, the striker made two appearances and scored twice.
As a trainer
Five months after retiring as a player, Gündüz Kılıç became the coach of Galatasaray Istanbul. This was followed by a season at Vefa Istanbul and a deployment as the national coach of Turkey on October 17, 1954 against Yugoslavia . Two weeks after leading the national team, the former striker returned to the Galatasaray coaching bench. At the end of the 1954/55 season he won the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi with his team . In the summer of 1955, Kılıç Metin signed Oktay from İzmirspor . The İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi could be defended in the following season, so Galatasaray qualified as the first Turkish team for the European Cup (today UEFA Champions League). After the 1956/57 season, Kılıç left Galatasaray.
After a two-year break, he returned as coach of Feriköy SK and took part with his team in the first season of the newly founded Millî Lig . Before the last game of the season, Kılıç resigned and was again coach at Galatasaray the following season. In 1962 he became Turkish champion for the first time. A year later the championship was defended and the newly played Turkish Cup was won. Kılıç was the first coach to win the double . He won the Turkish Cup with his team in 1965 and 1966. In September 1966 the Cumhurbaşkanlığı Kupası was won.
After seven years, Gündüz Kılıç Galatasaray left for good. Engagements at Altay Izmir and Beşiktaş Istanbul followed . In 1972 Kılıç ended his coaching career. In 1979 he was diagnosed with lung cancer and had cancer therapy in New York City . He died on May 17, 1980 as a result of his illness in Istanbul.
