İzmirspor is a Turkish sports club from the Izmir province of the same name . The football club currently plays in the regional amateur league. The association was founded in 1923. İzmirspor is one of eight football clubs in the province of Izmir that participate in Turkish professional and semi-professional football. Together with Beykozspor , İzmirspor was given the honor of playing the first game of the newly introduced and nationwide top division, today's Süper Lig , on February 21, 1959 . The greatest success in the club's history is the 4th place in the table in the Süper Lig during the 1959/60 season . The most famous player of the club is the Turkish legend Metin Oktay .
history
founding
The association was founded in 1923 in the Izmir district of Eşrefpaşa under the name Altınay SK . This club developed in the following years a great rivalry against Sakarya Kulübü , another club in the Eşrefpaşa district. After this rivalry hardened and threatened to prevent the district from competing with the clubs in the other districts, the notables of Eşrefpaşa decided to merge the two clubs. From this merger, the association with the current name İzmirspor was formed on November 28, 1930 . The club colors were first set to blue and white. A little later, at Fahrettin Altay's request, these colors were changed to the present-day form navy blue and white.
Entry into professional football
İzmirspor is one of the founding clubs of the highest Turkish league, today's Süper Lig . After the club was first class for nine years after the league was founded, they missed relegation in the summer of 1967 and rose for the first time in the club's history in the TFF 1st Lig . Here the championship and with it the direct resurgence was achieved straight away. Raised to the Süper Lig, the relegation failed in the first season.
Relegation to the lower leagues and modern times
After the club always competed in the second or third highest Turkish league until 2008, it was then fourth class for the first time . In 2010 they missed relegation and have played in the Bölgesel Amatoer Lig since then .
In the 2013/14 season they reached second place in the table with 60 collected points and qualified for the play-offs that lead into the TFF 3rd Lig. There they failed, however, at Tire 1922 Spor with 5-6 on penalties after the game ended 0-0 after 120 minutes. After a seventh place in the following season, they had to accept relegation to the Süper Amatör Küme as 12th place in the 2015/16 season.
Fans
In terms of numbers, İzmirspor has probably the fewest supporters of all the city's teams that were represented in professional football. The number of spectators fell even further after the sporting decline up to the Bölgesel Amatoer Lig . The İzmirspor Ultras are called Ateş , which means fire . The Ateş group expressly distances itself from rivalries with the other clubs from Izmir and speaks out openly against violence and in favor of friendship between the fans.
