Aleksandar Petaković ( Serbian - Cyrillic Александар Петаковић ; born February 6, 1930 in Belgrade , † April 12, 2011 in Kraljevo ) was a Yugoslav football player and coach .
biography
Club career
Petaković started his career at Radnički Belgrade . With the club he rose to the first division in 1953 and was one of the top scorers there, so that he was appointed to the national team for the first time in 1954 . Under coach Illés Spitz he achieved the best result in the club's history as third in the table in 1956, with 17 goals in 15 games he had made a decisive contribution. The following year he was in the cup final, which was lost despite a 3-0 half-time lead against local rivals Partizan Belgrade . By the end of the decade he placed with the team in the top third of the table, but in 1961 the descent to the second division followed.
Since Petaković had already passed the age limit of 28 years for moving to non-socialist countries, which is common in the Eastern Bloc , he was able to move to the West in 1961. He joined the Lille OSC in the French Division 2 , for which he scored eleven goals this season. After a season he moved to the Belgian club Standard Liège , where he hardly got a chance. From 1963 he therefore played for Fortuna Sittard in the Netherlands.
National team
Without international experience, Petaković was part of Aleksandar Tirnanić's squad for the 1954 World Cup , but was not used during the tournament. In the following years he was used irregularly, four years later in the squad again. In the Yugoslav opening game of the 1958 World Cup against Scotland , which ended in a 1-1 draw, he scored the first tournament goal for his colors. In the following game against France he was also successful as a goalscorer and was thus significantly involved in reaching the quarter-finals. His fourth tournament game was the 0: 1 defeat against reigning world champions Germany with a goal from Helmut Rahn . Until 1959 he ran for the national team.
Coaching career
Petaković coached various Yugoslav clubs, and in the late 1960s he also worked in Turkey at Vefa Istanbul and Izmirspor .
