Ahmet Yıldırım (born February 25, 1974 in Amasya ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. He is associated with the Galatasaray Istanbul and Beşiktaş Istanbul clubs . At Galatasaray he was part of the team that fans and clubs call legendary and in 2000 won the 1999/00 UEFA Cup , Turkish double, UEFA Super Cup and UEFA Champions quarter-finalist League of the 2000/01 season . With the Turkish national team he took part in the Confederations Cup 2003 and reached 3rd place.

Player career

society

Yıldırım began professional football at the second division side Izmirspor . In his first season at Izmirspor he played in three league games. In the second season, he quickly fought for a regular place and advanced to the shooting stars of the league. So he caught the people in charge of Fenerbahçe Istanbul and moved to this club in the summer of 1993. Here it was found to be insufficient by the coaching staff and handed over to the reserve team. After a game for the reserve, he was loaned to the first division team Samsunspor for the 1993/94 season. Here he played for a season, completed nine first division games and finished with Samsunspor in 5th place in the league.

After returning to Fenerbahçe in the summer of 1994, it was put up for sale. So he moved to the capital club MKE Ankaragücü for the upcoming season . At this club, he made it straight to the core formation and quickly established himself as a top performer. The coaches of the Turkish U-21 national team also noticed him through his performance . For the 1998/99 season Yıldırım left Ankaragücü after four years and moved to league rivals İstanbulspor . At this club, too, he quickly made it into the starting line-up.

After only one year for Istanbulspor, he left this club and moved to Istanbul's top club Galatasaray . Galatasaray's coach Fatih Terim was looking for a good alternative for defensive midfielders Okan Buruk and Suat Kaya and prompted the club's management to sign Yıldırıms. At Galatasaray he came to stakes quickly. Since Terim rotated frequently in these positions due to the triple load of the Turkish League , Turkish Cup and Champions League and because of the running intensity that falls on the defensive players in his system, Yıldırım came to games almost every week. With the start of the second half of the season he even got a regular place in phases and played in almost all competitions. His team had an unfortunate start in the first half of the Champions League and secured third place in the table in the last group game with a 3-2 home win against AC Milan and thus qualified for participation in the UEFA Cup . Here they knocked out FC Bologna , Borussia Dortmund , RCD Mallorca and Leeds United one after the other and met Arsenal FC in the final . In a very competitive match, they became the first Turkish team to win a European club football competition, the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup , through a penalty shoot-out . In addition, by defending the title in the Turkish Championship , they won this trophy for the fourth time in a row and set a new record. In addition, winning the Turkish Cup made it a double in Turkish football.

For the upcoming season, Terim left Galatasaray after four years and took over Fiorentina . Terim was followed by the Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu in the red and yellow . Under this coach Yıldırım no longer received the stakes as under Terim. At the beginning of the season, Galatasaray won the UEFA Super Cup and again achieved a novelty in the club's history and also in Turkish football. In the final they prevailed against Real Madrid with a golden goal . In the league failed to defend the title and so one was runner-up.

In the summer of 2001, Galatasaray experienced a major revision within the team. The majority of the players left the team that had achieved the greatest successes in the club's history in previous years. Among the players who left the club included Cláudio Taffarel , Gheorghe Popescu , Emre Belözoğlu , Okan Buruk , Mário Jardel , Gheorghe Hagi and Ümit Davala . Yıldırım was added to the list of players to leave the club. So Yıldırım was exchanged for Ayhan Akman and so switched to city rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul . Although Yıldırım initially refused, he later agreed to the move. He stressed that he did not want to leave Galatasaray and blamed coach Lucescu for his departure. Lucescu himself said about the change that he didn't want to let Yıldırım go and that the change was a misunderstanding with the club's management. At Beşiktaş, Yıldırım quickly found his way into the team and was promoted to national team here. He finished the first season with his team in 3rd place in the table and reached the final of the Turkish Cup. In the final meeting they lost to Kocaelispor 0: 4 and ended the 2001/02 season without a title. In the new season his club celebrated its 100th anniversary and so the club management invested a lot in the team. The Romanian Mircea Lucescu was introduced as the trainer . He had won the Turkish championship with Galatasaray last season, but was released due to the upcoming return of Fatih Terim , due to the expiry of his contract. In the 2002/03 season you delivered a long championship fight with Galatasaray, which you decided for yourself at the end of the season. Since Beşiktaş has not been a champion for nine years and it was the championship for the 100th anniversary, this championship had a symbolic meaning for the club and its fans. Yıldırım played two more seasons for Beşiktaş after this success, but like his team fell short of expectations.

For the season 2005/06 Yıldırım moved to the capital city first division Ankaraspor and played here for one season. For the 2006/07 season, a patron took over the third division Etimesgut Şekerspor and tried by recruiting stars to lead the club into the TFF 1. Lig and then into the Süper Lig . For example, stars such as Sergen Yalçın , Ahmet Dursun , Tamer Tuna , Faruk Sarman , Nuri Çolak and Evren Turhan were signed up to the capital's club. Yıldırım was among the players who moved to Şekerspor. After the promotion to the 1st Lig failed at the end of the season, the team was disbanded. So Yıldırım left the club for the second division Malatyaspor . Here he was mostly on the bench and only played six times. For the 2008/09 season he changed teams again and was hired by the second division Adanaspor . Here, too, he was more of a reservist and ended his active football career at the end of the season.

National team

Yıldırım was nominated for the first time in the Turkish U-21 national team during his second season at Samsunspor in 1994 and completed two games for the U-21s in two years.

Seven years after his work with the U-21 he was nominated for the squad of the second selection of the Turkish national team and completed two games for these.

In 2003 he was nominated a total of twelve times for the Turkish national team and played a total of four games. Among other things, he was nominated as part of the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup by then national coach Şenol Güneş in the squad of the Turkish national team . During the tournament he completed two international matches and reached 3rd place with his team at the end of the tournament.

Coaching career

Following his football career , he took over the post of assistant coach at the second division club Mersin İdmanyurdu and assisted the head coach and his former teammate from his time at Ankaragücu, Serhat Güller . After Güller left the club in the second half of the season, Yıldırım also gave up his position.

For the 2010/11 season he took over the third division club Körfez FK and has been the head coach of this club since then.

In spring 2014, Yıldırım took over the Istanbul third division club Pendikspor . With this club he played for two seasons for promotion, but missed it both times. As a consequence, he left the Istanbul club in summer 2015. For the next season he was hired as the new head coach at league rivals Fethiyespor . After the lack of success, he left this club for the next winter break.

For the second half of the 2015/16 season he took over the fourth division Büyükşehir Belediye Erzurumspor . On the penultimate match day of the 2015/16 season, he led this club prematurely to the championship of the TFF 3rd Lig and thus to the first promotion in the club's history to the TFF 2nd Lig .
