Ankara Şekerspor or just Şekerspor is a Turkish football club from Ankara and was founded in 1947 as the operating team of the state sugar factory. The club colors are green and white. The club played a total of ten seasons in the Süper Lig in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1990s . In the all-time table of the Süper Lig , the club is in 41st place. This makes the club, after MKE Ankaragücü , Gençlerbirliği Ankara and PTT SK (later renamed Türk Telekomspor ), the fourth most successful club in the capital Ankara to have ever played in the Süper Lig.

history

Foundation of the association and first years

The association was founded in 1947 as the operating team of the Türkiye Şeker Fabrikaları , the then state-owned sugar factories, in Ankara. Although the company had factories all over the country, its headquarters were in the Turkish capital, Ankara . After the club was founded, the club took part in the regional Ankara Futbol Ligi (German Ankara Football League ). In 1959 the club merged with the Ankara Hilâl Gençlikspor club and was henceforth called Şeker Hilâl Spor Kulübü, Şeker Hilâl SK for short or just Şeker Hilâl. The club colors, which were green and white until the merger with Hilâl Gençlikspor, have been changed to blue and yellow.

Participation in professional football and first relegation

In the spring of 1959, the first nationwide Millî Lig , now known as the Süper Lig , was founded. Up to this point in time, there was no national league in Turkey, but regional leagues existed in the larger metropolitan areas. Şekerspor was playing in the Ankara Futbol Ligi at that time . The Turkish Football Association set several conditions as a condition of participation. The clubs that met these requirements were included in the league. From the perspective of the football association, Şekerspor failed to meet the requirements, which is why they did not participate in the first season of the Millî Lig. This was played from February 1959 to June 1959 and ended with the championship of Fenerbahçe Istanbul . For the second season, for the season 1959/60 , Şekerspor received the participation permit and from then on played in the top Turkish league. Under the direction of head coach Selahattin Tetik they finished 12th in the table at the end of the season and stayed in the middle of the table for the entire season. After one fought for relegation in the 1960/61 season towards the end of the season and finally reached it, one ended the following season as bottom of the table and had to play in the subsequent relegation round to stay relegated . After all, with the 4th relegation place, the relegation was only achieved in the second instance.

The season 1962/63 ended as bottom of the table and rose to the newly introduced and nationwide second highest division, in the 2nd league . With the introduction of the 2nd Lig, the Millî Lig was renamed the 1st Lig. After relegation, the club name was changed back to Ankara Şekerspor or the more common short form Şekerspor and the club colors were changed back to green and white.

Second relegation and legally enforced relegation

In the first season of the 2nd Lig they sat down straight away at the top of the table and, under the leadership of head coach Fahrettin Cansever, reached the first championship of the 2nd Lig and thus direct promotion to the 1st Lig. Ascended to the 1st Lig You fought over the entire season to stay in the league. After you still achieved relegation in the summer of 1965, you missed him in a very controversial way in the following season. In the 1965/66 season the encounter Şekerspor- Beykozspor was canceled due to fan riots and attacks on the players of Şekerspor when the score was 1-0 for Şekerspor and the game was repeated. The rescheduling ended 1: 1. The Şekerspor officials protested against this replay and insisted that the game was interrupted by the Beykozspor fans and that they themselves had to be determined as the winner by decision. After Şekerspor was relegated at the end of the 1965/66 season with a point difference but with a significantly better goal difference, they lodged an appeal in court. They demanded that the game should be recognized as a victory, whereby one would have achieved relegation. After a year of trial, the court declared that Şekerspor had been the winner. The Turkish Football Association decided that, after having played in the second division for a year, Şekerspor would participate in the first division in addition to the regular promoted players.

Relegation to the amateur league

The TFF 2. Lig 2012/13 finished Çamlıdere Şekerspor the season as 17th and thus bottom of the table and consequently missed the relegation of the TFF 2. Lig. Thus, the former long-time first division began to play in the TFF 3. Lig from the summer of 2013.

That summer, the summer of 2013, the club changed its name again and took the original name Ankara Şekerspor again. The club management justified the change by reviving the old Şekerspor. The historical logo was reintroduced accordingly.

The club signed a name sponsorship agreement with the TUTAP internet platform . After that, the club should have the company name in its club name for the duration of the contract and therefore be called TUTAP Şekerspor . After the team played for relegation over the course of the season and there was no improvement towards the end of the season, the sponsorship contract was terminated before the 27th match day. The club played the remaining game days under the name Şekerspor or Ankara Şekerspor. On matchday 29, the team lost 3-0 to Çorum Belediyespor in front of their home crowd . With this home defeat, the team missed the league of the TFF 3rd Lig and rose for the first time in its club history in the amateur football.

After the relegation, the club accused the incumbent mayor of Ankara , Melih Gökçek , to be jointly responsible for the relegation. According to the club's management, he would have given significant support during his political career through a number of test- tube clubs such as Osmanlıspor FK , Keçiörengücü or Bugsaşspor and given a lot of the city administration's income to these clubs. In addition, through his official powers, he gave his clubs access to training facilities and stadiums. Long-established clubs like Şekerspor, which are otherwise always supported by the city administration in Turkish football, were not supported and had to survive through their own efforts.
