Vahap Özbayer (born August 20, 1943 in Ankara ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. He played for Eskişehirspor for five years and was involved in some of the most important successes in the club's history during this time. He belonged to the legendary team of the club, which was the first Anatolian team to break through the hegemony of the three big Istanbul clubs Beşiktaş , Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray and, in the 1960s and 1970s, was three times Turkish runner-up and cup winner .

Player career

society

Özbayer began playing soccer as a street soccer player. He then played in the school team and began club football at Ankara Güneşspor . In the summer of 1963 he rose with his club in the 2nd Futbol Ligi , the second highest Turkish league. In this league he played for one season for Güneşspor and was committed to the next season by first division club Ankara Şekerspor . With this club he established himself as a regular player within the first season. In four seasons he established himself as one of the most important performers at Şekerspor and, together with Muharrem Domaniçdağ, with 19 goals he became the most successful first division shooter in the club's history. He drew the attention of several clubs to himself, especially through his performances in the 1967/68 season.

Although Özbayer was one of the most sought-after players in the 1968 summer transfer period, he did not move to an Istanbul club, but was obliged by league rivals Eskişehirspor for a transfer fee of 100,000 lira. Here he won a regular place straight away. The 1968/69 season he helped the club to achieve the greatest success in the club's history with the Turkish runner-up . Up to this season, the three big Istanbul clubs Beşiktaş , Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray decided the Turkish championship and the runner-up among themselves. This success was the greatest of an Anatolian team in Turkish football to date. After this championship, the team established itself as a permanent fixture in Turkish football and reached the Turkish runner-up two more times in the next six seasons, once in 3rd place in the table and once in 4th place in the table. In addition, the Turkish Cup ( 1970/71 ) was won once, the Turkish Cup final ( 1969/70 ) was won once , and the President's Cup in 1971 and the Prime Minister's Cup in 1972 for the second time in the club's history . Özbayer was part of the Eskişehirspor squad until the summer of 1973 and remained a regular player until his last season and was a substitute player in the last season.

In the summer of 1973 it was put on the sales list by Eskişehirspor. So he moved to the second division Denizlispor for the new season for a transfer fee of 137,500 lira .

National team

Özbayer was nominated for the first time and for the squad of the Turkish national team in 1971 as part of a test match against the Polish national team by national coach Cihat Arman and made his international debut in this match.

In total, he completed two full international matches for Turkey.

Coaching career

The beginnings of Özbayer's coaching career are not documented in detail. As the first documented source, he trained the third division Bozüyükspor in the 1987/88 season . In 1994 he looked after Eskişehir Demirspor for three months and from 1995–1996 he worked as a youth coach at Eskişehirspor .
