Pendikspor is a Turkish football club from Istanbul and was founded in 1950. The club caused a stir when it prevailed 2-1 in the third main round of the Turkish Football Cup of the 1999/00 season against the Turkish top club Fenerbahçe Istanbul and threw them out of the cup competition.

history

founding

It was originally founded as Pendik Gençlerbirliği in 1927 . The second foundation took place in 1950. The club played in the lower regional amateur leagues until the summer of 1984.

Entry into professional football

After Turkish professional football was reduced from three to just two professional leagues in the summer of 1980, the third highest professional football league, the 3rd Lig , now known as the TFF 2nd Lig, was reintroduced in 1984 on the directive of the then President Turgut Özal . In addition, it was announced that after certain conditions have been met, one can apply for a league participation. In order to promote urban development, several city and district notables tried to meet the requirements for third division participation. After the requirements were met, the Turkish Football Association granted the right to participate. Pendikspor took part as one of many Istanbul district teams in the 1984/85 season in the reintroduced 3rd league and was third in Group 1 at the end of the season.

Promotion to the second division and forced relegation to the TFF 2. Lig

Pendikspor reached the championship in the third division season 1997/98 and thus the first ascent in the club's history to the second highest division in the 2nd league . On August 17, 1999, the Gölcük earthquake struck Turkey . In addition to a large number of fatalities, the earthquake also resulted in almost all of the infrastructure in the affected provinces being damaged. Due to these circumstances, the teams Sakaryaspor , Düzcespor ve Darıca Gençlerbirliği , who came from the provinces concerned, could no longer participate in the game of the 2nd Lig. The Turkish Football Association freed these three clubs from the rest of the game and scored all remaining games with a 3-0 defeat. The clubs were kept for the coming season in the 2nd Lig, so that instead of the teams concerned, other teams had to relegate. Since Pendikspor was with Darıca Gençlerbirliği in a group and was in third from bottom place in the table Pendikspor had to relegate to the 3rd Lig.
