Abdülkerim Durmaz (born September 13, 1960 in Karagümrük , Istanbul ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his activities for Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Karagümrük SK , he is associated with these clubs. Especially from the latter, he is perceived by fan and club sides as one of the most important players in club history. He is associated with Fenerbahçes ' success in the European Cup against French champions Girondins Bordeaux and the 5-0 defeat of the Turkish national team against England . In addition to his football career, he was mainly noticed because of his dissolute nightlife and was therefore a popular figure in the tabloid press .

Player career

The first years and Karagümrük SK

Durmaz was born in Karagümrük , a neighborhood in the Fatih district of Istanbul . Here, like most of the children in his neighborhood, he played street football. At the age of 15 he was accepted into the youth department of the local soccer club Karagümrük SK . At this club he was looked after by the talented young trainer Osman Odman , who was known as Lağım Osman ( Eng . Kloaken Osman ) because of his vulgar language . Odman let Durmaz play as a center forward in the youth team. In this role Durmaz developed into one of the best strikers in the youth league. He was the top scorer several times and his team was multiple cup winners.

In 1978 Durmaz was accepted into the professional team at the age of 18. He made his professional debut in the third division game against Tarsus İdman Yurdu . In the 1st team, Durmaz quickly established himself as a regular player and top performer. In the third division season 1979/80 he succeeded with Karagümrük the runner-up in the 3rd Futbol Ligi and thus the promotion to the 2nd Futbol Ligi . Although the third division was dissolved by a spontaneous decision by the national football association in the summer of 1980 and all teams were included in the expanded second division, Karagümrük was one of the few teams that had already managed this promotion to the second division on their own.

After this promotion Durmaz 'team consolidated its position in the 2nd Futbol Ligi and played in the second division season 1982/83 from the beginning for the championship. Durmaz was one of the most noticeable players in the league, was chosen by many daily newspapers as a player in the second division of Group A and was in first place in the list of goals for this group with nine goals. In the second half of the season Durmaz kept his form and scored some spectacular goals, such as. B. the fall retractor gate against Eyupspor . He finished the season with his team as champions of the 2nd league and thus achieved promotion to the 1st league. As a result, Karagümrük took part in the 1st league again after 21 years. According to his own information, Durmaz was the top scorer in Group A of the 2nd Lig with 16 goals this season.

After the rise, Karagümrük did not succeed in establishing himself in the first division. The club slipped into the relegation zone relatively early and was unable to free itself from this despite two coach changes. So the club was relegated after just one season. Durmaz completed 27 of the possible 24 league games of his team this season and became one of the most sought-after youngsters in the league in the 1984 summer transfer period. Contrary to his previous playing position, he was used more and more in the libero position during this season .

Fenerbahçe Istanbul

After the descent of Karagümruks in the summer of 1984, the two arch rivals Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe Istanbul competed for Durmaz. Galatasaray quickly agreed on a transfer fee with Karagümrük and then tried to win Durmaz's approval for the move. For this purpose, the then Galatasaray President Ali Uras met with Durmaz personally and offered him a salary of 13 million Turkish Lira . According to his own information, Durmaz Uras announced that he was a fanatical Fenerbahçe supporter, had attended every Fenerbahçe game since he was a child and therefore declined the offer. He then accepted the offer from Fenerbahçe, which was significantly lower endowed with eight million lira, and switched to his dream club for the new season.

At Fenerbahçe he was immediately accepted by head coach Todor Veselinović in the regular team. Together with Müjdat Yetkiner , Cem Pamiroğlu , Erdoğan Arıca and İsmail Kartal , he formed the defense of his team in the 1984/85 season . At the end of the season, the Turkish championship was won. Over the entire season, the team fought with Beşiktaş for the championship lead. On the third last day of the match, Durmaz's team met their direct championship rivals away from home. Both teams went into this encounter tied. At the end of the season Durmaz 'club ended the season tied to Beşiktaş due to the better goal difference as champions. In addition, the President's Cup and, for the third time in a row, the Navy Cup were won this season . With 41 competitive appearances, Durmaz became one of the players with the most appearances for Fenerbahçe this season. He experienced the most successful period of his career and established himself as a regular player in the Turkish national team .

Despite the championship won, the club management replaced coach Veselinović by the Hungarian Kálmán Mészöly . Under this coach, the team met the reigning French champions Girondins Bordeaux in the European Cup of the 1985/86 season . Against this club, which had reigning European champions like Alain Giresse and Patrick Battiston , Jean Tigana in their ranks and was French champions twice in a row, Fenerbahçe was treated as a blatant outsider and the club were given little chance of advancing. At that time, the relationship between Turkey and France was very tense because of the attacks by the Asala terrorist organization . Furthermore, the Turkish teams were eliminated without exception in the European club cup competitions in the first round. In the first game, played on September 1, 1985 in Bordeaux , Fenerbahçe created a big surprise and defeated Girondins 3-2 away. As defense chief, Durmaz was seen by the Turkish and French specialist press as one of the main players in this success. In the second leg, Durmaz's team earned a 0-0 draw and prevailed against Girondins. Once again Durmaz was named as one of the most important players in this success. This advancement was celebrated as a great success in Turkish football at the time and also led to Durmaz being positively associated with these Bordeaux games. In the second round, the team met IFK Göteborg . In the first away game, Fenerbahçe lost 4-0. Especially the goalkeeper Yaşar Duran and the defense around the defense chief Durmaz were described as the main responsible for this defeat. After team captain Onur Kayador was sent off with a red card in the 67th minute, Durmaz saw the red card in the 70th minute. The UEFA subsequently granted Durmaz a three-game suspension for this game.

In this and the coming season, Durmaz's team had no chance in the championship. In the two-point rule valid at that time , one occupied table positions that showed a point difference of far more than 14 points to the respective champions. In these seasons, the club also missed qualifying for the European cup competitions. After it became apparent in the 1986/87 season that Fenerbahçe would not qualify for any European cup competition via the league placement, the team focused on the Turkish Cup competition. Here the team met in the quarter-finals against the then strong Samsunspor club . This club had won the last three games against Fenerbahçe and in two of these games Fenerbahçe even with 0: 4 inflicted two of the bitterest defeats in the club's history. In the first game of the cup quarter-finals, Durmaz's team Samsunspor lost 1-0 away. As a result, the club risked qualifying for the European cup competitions on the one hand and experienced the fourth defeat in a row against Samsunspor. Under these tense circumstances, both teams delivered a thrilling game in the second leg, which was played in front of a home crowd on April 1, 1987. Fenerbahçe missed several high profile chances and missed a penalty. The game ended 0-0, which means that Samsunspor qualified for the semi-finals due to the first leg victory. Immediately after the final whistle there was a scuffle between players from both teams. The goalkeeper of Samsunspor, Fatih Uraz , had been too carefree and happy about the semi-finals that he caused the resentment of some Fenerbahçe players. This circumstance caused tumultuous situations on the field in which Durmaz then took part. As a result, Durmaz and other teammates such as Müjdat Yetkiner , Sedat Karaoğlu and Hasan Özdemir received an eight-month suspension from the national football association. Durmaz himself saw the blame on the players of Samsunspor, who committed gestures etc. to provoke the Fenerbahçe supporters after the end of the game.

After Fenerbahçe clearly awarded the championship in the 1985/86 season and failed to qualify for any European cup competition twice in a row, a revision of the team roster was decided in the summer of 1988. For this purpose, the new season was committed with Todor Veselinović, the master coach from the season 1984/85 . In addition, the club signed an international star with the German goalkeeper Toni Schumacher . Furthermore, the club's management continued to invest in the team and signed Şenol Ustaömer , Oğuz Çetin , Aykut Kocaman , Turhan Sofuoğlu , Hasan Vezir , Hakan Tecimer and Orhan Kapucu stars and important youngsters of the time. Some players who had received negative attention in the past seasons should be sorted out after the pre-season preparation camp and put on display for sale. Durmaz, who had become a popular figure in the tabloid press because of his extravagant nightlife and no longer performed, drew the displeasure of many people in the club. Nevertheless, Veselinović, who had immediately used Durmaz as a regular four years ago, took him to Durmaz's preparation camp and gave him one last chance. According to Durmaz's own statements, he was so out of shape at this camp that he was very irritable and in training sessions he went very hard in the duels with his teammates. So he was exhorted to control by Veselinović. Durmaz reacted irritably to this advice and left the training session without prior notice or cancellation. According to his own statements, he asked the then club president Tahsin Kaya for his sale.

MKE Ankaragücü to Güngören Belediyespor

In the summer of 1988 Durmaz left Fenerbahçe after four years and moved to MKE Ankaragücü within the 1st Lig . After he could not establish himself here during a season, he moved to Sakaryaspor after a season . Durmaz also failed to establish himself within the team at Sakaryaspor. In the summer of 1990 he left this club. The following two seasons of his career remained undocumented. For the 1992/93 season Durmaz joined the Istanbul second division club Zeytinburnuspor . With this club he finished the second division season 1992/93 as runner-up and rose to the 1st Lig. Although this club management of this club wanted to keep Durmaz in the squad, this refused a contract extension and moved to his first club Karagümrük. For the then third division team Durmaz played for two seasons and did not make it to the 2nd league. So he left Karagümrük in the summer of 1995, played one season for Güngören Belediyespor and then ended his career at the end of the 1995/96 season.

National team

Durmaz's national team career only began after he moved to Fenerbahçe Istanbul . It was only here that the people in charge of the Turkish U-21 national team noticed him, who nominated him for an upcoming test match. Durmaz made his general international debut against the U-21 national team of the USSR .

In September 1984 he was appointed by the incumbent national coach Candan Tarhan in the squad of the Turkish national team and made his international debut in the friendly against Poland . By spring 1986 Durmaz came to ten more international appearances. He ousted the long-time captain, record player and libero of the national team Fatih Terim and played in this position for the following two years.

He was one of the players who were in the squad in two of the bitterest defeats for the Turkish national team. On 14 November 1984 the team lost WM1986 - qualifier at home to the English national team with 0: 8th Durmaz sat on the bench due to injury and was therefore spared the criticism. In the second leg the team lost again to England, this time 5-0. In this game Durmaz played the full length of the game and made major mistakes against the then unknown English striker Gary Lineker , who made his international debut . Lineker overcame the Durmaz-led Turkish defense with simple double passes and scored three goals. After the game, Durmaz and his teammate Yaşar Duran were portrayed by the Turkish press as the main responsible for this bitter defeat.

Coaching career

As early as 1990, when he was still an active soccer player, Durmaz took part in a training seminar led by German trainer Jupp Derwall , and received his trainer's license here.

Following his football career, he began his coaching career and took over the club in his neighborhood, Karagümrük SK , as his first activity . In January 1997 he resigned from his position. His club missed the relegation of the 3rd Futbol Ligi and was relegated to the amateur league for the first time in its history. After Durmaz had not worked as a coach for about two years, he took over Güngören Belediyespor in the summer of 1999, another club where he had also been a player. In March 2000 he left this club again. The next summer he took over another Istanbul club, Eyüpspor , but left it in September 2000.

In October 2001 he took over Karagümrük for the second time. He led the then fourth division team to the championship of the 2001/02 season and thus to promotion to the 2nd Futbol Ligi Bategorisi , the third highest Turkish division at the time. After this success, he trained his team in this league until January 2003 and then left this club. Immediately after this activity he took over Güngören Belediyespor for the second time and coached this club until the end of the season.

Towards the end of the 2004/05 season he took over the fourth division team Kasımpaşa Istanbul in March 2005 . After Karagümrük he also led this club to the championship of the TFF 3rd Lig and thus to promotion to the 2nd Futbol Ligi Bategorisi. Also with this club he stayed in the 2nd division, but left the club for the winter break 2005/06.

From the summer of 2006 Durmaz began to work outside of Istanbul as a coach and looked after the fourth division clubs Kahramanmaraşspor , Mersin İdman Yurdu and Adana Demirspor .

He then coached the Istanbul third division club Pendikspor from January 2010 to May 2011 . In the summer of 2012 he took over the third division Istanbul Güngörenspor , which was formerly called Güngören Belediyespor, for the third time and was responsible for it until January 2013.

Trivia

  • Durmaz was known as a very physical and aggressive player. To give his team an advantage, he also committed unsportsmanlike conduct. According to his own statements, he had learned or adopted these difficulties from his junior coach Osman Odman . This was called Lağım Osman ( Eng . Kloaken Osman ) due to its vulgar nature and its unfair playing style at player times .
  • Durmaz has been a reformed Muslim since the early 2000s. Although he did not come from any religious family and was decried as a man of life all his life, he experienced this change of heart. By his own admission, the belief helped Durmaz lead a better life and become a better person.
  • Durmaz is known for speaking openly about his footballing career and self-deprecatingly telling his mistakes and the performance of his team. In a television interview, for example, he contradicted the presenter, who previously spoke of the lack of constancy of the Turkish national team in Durmaz's time, by awarding the Turkish national team of that time a constancy, namely the constancy of constantly losing. In the same interview, he explained that he jokingly defended the 5-0 away defeat against the English national team against the specialist press at the time by saying that the team had conceded three fewer goals than in the first leg, which Turkey lost 8-0 at home .
