Turhan Sofuoğlu (born August 18, 1965 in Sakarya ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Due to his many years of work for Fenerbahçe Istanbul , he is associated with this club. Here he was an important member of the team that became champions in 1988/89 with 103 goals and therefore went down in the club's history as the championship team with 103 goals . Sofuoğlu managed the 100th first division goal of his team in this record season. He was called Rambo Turhan by Fenerbahçe supporters due to his combative style of play .

Player career

Sakaryaspor

The beginnings of Sofuoğlu's playing career are not documented. As the first occupied station he played in the 1985/86 season at the third division Yalovaspor . For the 1986/87 season he moved to the first division club Sakaryaspor , the best known and most successful club in his home province of Sakarya . At this club he played with players like Oğuz Çetin , Aykut Kocaman , Engin İpekoğlu , Aykut Yiğit , Recep Çetin , Rahim Zafer , Nezihi Tosuncuk and Özcan Kızıltan ; all of them players who were either already important people in Turkish football or who should become one in the next few years. In the first season Sofuoğlu conquered a regular place as a 20-year-old, but could not prevent the relegation of his team. In the 2nd Turkish league , Sofuoğlu's club established itself at the top of the table early on and achieved direct promotion to the 1st league through the league's championship . In the first season after promotion, Sofuoğlu's team surprisingly became Turkish Cup winners and finished the league in eleventh place. From the predominantly young team, many players advanced to the most sought-after players in the summer transfer period.

Fenerbahçe Istanbul

In the summer of 1988 Sofuoğlu moved to Fenerbahçe Istanbul together with his teammates Oğuz Çetin, Aykut Kocaman and Serdar Şenkaya . At Fenerbahçe, Todor Veselinović, the master coach from the 1984/85 season , was committed for this season . This coach selected Sofuoğlu as one of the players with whom he built his new team. In addition, the club signed an international star with the German goalkeeper Toni Schumacher . Furthermore, the club's management continued to invest in the team and signed Şenol Ustaömer , Oğuz Çetin, Aykut Kocaman, Hakan Tecimer , Hasan Vezir and Orhan Kapucu stars and important youngsters of the time. This season, Sofuoğlu's team fought close head-to-head for the Turkish championship with arch rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul . After Beşiktaş was able to claim the first half of the season with a one-point difference in front of Fenerbahçe as autumn champions , Fenerbahçe took over the championship lead on the second day of the second round. On the 25th matchday the team lost the championship lead again to Beşiktaş, took it over a matchday again and lost them again on the 27th matchday to their arch rivals. On matchday 28, both teams met in the derby. In front of their home crowd, Sofuoğlu's side fell behind in the 15th minute and were able to equalize through Aykut Kocaman in the 23rd minute . After the hard-fought game remained 1-1 for a long time, Tecimer scored the 2-1 winning goal in the 64th minute and secured victory for his team in this championship decisive game. As the season progressed, Sofuoğlu's team consistently expanded their league lead and played an outstanding season. The season ended with ten points ahead of runner-up Galatasaray. In addition, the team scored 103 goals over the entire season and thus earned a new goal record in the 1st Lig . This team went into the club annals as the championship team with 103 goals . Sofuoğlu was involved in this success this season with 36 competitive appearances and eleven goals. He was also honored to have scored the 100th league goal of his team in this record season with his goal on the last match day against Sarıyer SK . At the end of the season, Sofuoğlu's team won the Prime Minister's Cup . At the beginning of the next season, Sofuoğlu and his team also won the President's Cup game , the version of the Turkish Supercup at the time .

After this successful season, Fenerbahçe remained the next four seasons without significant success. Neither in the championship nor in the Turkish Cup succeeded in winning the title. The only bright spots were the Prime Minister's Cup in the 1992/93 season and the TSYD Istanbul Cup in the 1994/95 season . While Sofuoğlu lost his regular place in the first season after the championship, he was regularly used as a supplementary player. In the 1990/91 and 1991/92 seasons he fought his way back over a large part of the season. After he did not get beyond sporadic missions in the two seasons 1992/93, he was loaned to Bursaspor and Orduspor for the seasons 1993/95 and 1995/96 . At the end of the 1994/95 season he ended his career here.

National team

Sofuoğlu's international career began in 1989 with a deployment for the Turkish U-21 national team .

As part of a friendly against the Greek national team , Sofuoğlu was nominated for the first time in the squad of the Turkish national team in the summer of 1989 national coach Tınaz Tırpan . In this game he made his international debut. By 1992 Sofuoğlu was nominated seven more times and completed six more internationals.

Coaching career

Sofuoğlu started working as a junior coach at Fenerbahçe Istanbul in 1997 and was promoted to assistant coach of the professional team for the 1999/2000 season. Thereby he assisted his long-time teammate Rıdvan Dilmen and then his successor Zdeněk Zeman . After Zeman resigned as head coach, Sofuoğlu was appointed as head coach until the end of the season. As head coach, he did not succeed in getting his team back on track for the championship, but he achieved four derby wins. Most memorable was his win in the intercontinental derby against arch rivals Galatasaray Istanbul . In the game Galatasaray dominated over the entire length of the game, while Sofuoğlu's team played defensively oriented towards a draw. With his deflected free-kick goal from Samuel Johnson , Sofuoğlu's team surprisingly defeated their arch-rivals, who had just had their most successful time and this season, in addition to the fourth championship in a row, also won the Turkish double and won the UEFA Cup. With his team he finished the season in 4th place in the table.

After working at Fenerbahçe, he worked for various second and third division clubs, but remained at all coaching stations without any notable success.
